"A 44-room dog-friendly inn in Carmel village, long co-owned by Doris Day, the relaxed family-run pick near Big Sur."
Cypress Inn is a 44-room family-run hotel in the centre of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the walkable village that serves as the northern gateway to Big Sur. The Mediterranean-style building dates to 1929, and the late actress Doris Day was a co-owner from 1985 until her death in 2019, alongside business partner Dennis LeVett; her love of animals is why the inn is famously and thoroughly dog-friendly. For a solo traveller it is an easy, sociable base: you can walk to Carmel's galleries, restaurants and beach, and Terry's Lounge, named for Day's son Terry Melcher, is a relaxed spot for a meal or a drink at the bar where solo guests fit right in. The honest caveats: this is a historic village inn, not a coastal resort, so rooms are individually styled but on the cosier side, there is no pool or spa, and Big Sur's dramatic coast is a drive of roughly 40 minutes south rather than on the doorstep. Travelling with a dog only makes it a better fit.
Ask for the Doris Day Suite or one of the larger rooms; this is a historic 1929 inn, so rooms vary in size and character.
If you have a dog, mention it when booking; the inn welcomes pets with beds, bowls and treats. Eat at the bar in Terry's Lounge if you are solo, and start the morning with a walk down to Carmel Beach.
Cypress Inn sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Big Sur for a Solo Retreat list. It scored an aggregate 9.2/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a solo retreat-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Big Sur neighbourhood, see Carmel-by-the-Sea (village) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
With dates settled, the booking window that works is about twelve weeks ahead. Suites with the prime view angle sell through first; for peak months, availability is measured in months rather than weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
