Why Ventana Big Sur, an Alila Resort for a solo retreat

Ventana Big Sur, an Alila resort, is the Big Sur coast's most self-contained solo retreat. The property opened in 1975 and was later reinvented as an adults-only, all-inclusive resort spread over 160 acres of redwood and meadow above Highway 1. Its 54 rooms and suites are scattered across the hillside, many with wood-burning fireplaces, private decks and hot tubs, and the most private accommodation is the cluster of standalone villas and Big Sur Spa Suites. For a solo trip the all-inclusive model does the heavy lifting: rates fold in all meals, the in-room mini-bar, daily yoga and the evening wine-and-cheese hour, so there are no dining decisions to make alone. The glass-walled Sur House restaurant is reserved for resort guests, and the spa, pools and guided nature walks fill the days. The honest trade-off is cost and access, since the all-inclusive rates are among the steepest on the coast and Highway 1 is prone to closures that can complicate the drive in.

Best room to request

A standalone villa or Big Sur Spa Suite for a private hot tub and maximum seclusion, or a forest-view room for a lower-priced option.

Concierge tip

The all-inclusive rate covers the choices that can feel awkward to make solo, from meals to the in-room bar. The daily wine-and-cheese hour is an easy way to meet other guests in the evening, and the morning yoga is a gentle way to start the day.

The wider context

Ventana Big Sur, an Alila Resort sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Big Sur for a Solo Retreat list. It scored an aggregate 9.7/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a solo retreat-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Big Sur neighbourhood, see Big Sur (redwood meadow) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.

If you have already chosen the dates, our editor recommends booking the room twelve weeks ahead. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
