The Brando occupies Onetahi, one of the low coral motus ringing Tetiaroa, the atoll Marlon Brando fell for while filming Mutiny on the Bounty and later took on a long lease; the resort opened in 2014, a decade after his death. It is the only luxury resort on a fully private French Polynesian atoll, reached by a roughly twenty-minute flight from Papeete to Tetiaroa's own airstrip, and the most discreet address in the Pacific. Its 35 one-to-three-bedroom villas, plus the standalone three-bedroom Teremoana residence, are all beachfront with a private plunge pool and a path straight to the lagoon. Dining is a real reason to come: Les Mutinés for French-Polynesian tasting menus, the barefoot Beachcomber Café on the sand, teppanyaki at Nami, and cocktails at Bob's Bar, once Brando's own. The resort runs on solar and coconut-oil biofuel, with the Tetiaroa Society research station on the island. Honest con: the price is staggering (from roughly $3,500 a night and far higher for the residence), the eco-luxe style is understated rather than glittering, and the villas are beachfront, not overwater, so couples set on a stilted lagoon bungalow should look elsewhere on this list.
