Montage Kapalua Bay's case is space. It opened in 2014 with no standard hotel rooms at all: every one of its 50 accommodations is a residential suite with a full kitchen, which suits families and multigenerational groups settling in for a week.
The suites run from one to four bedrooms, including ocean-view two-bedrooms and a four-bedroom penthouse.
Cane and Canoe handles dinner, the Kai pool lounge covers daytime, and Spa Montage runs the wellness programme; the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua sits nearby on the same northwest tip of Maui. A full kitchen in every suite makes long family stays easier and cheaper than eating out three times a day. Be honest about the trade-offs, though: those large residences are priced accordingly, so for two people it is usually more room and more money than you need, and Kapalua is quiet and a fair drive from the busier Ka'anapali and Wailea resorts. Best for families who want space and a kitchen over a couple's hideaway.
