"Restored 18th-century villa, 24 rooms, World's #1 Hotel 2023, the most intimate luxury on the lake."
Passalacqua is the most intimate luxury address on Lake Como, and for a proposal that intimacy is the whole case. The De Santis family, who also own the grander Grand Hotel Tremezzo, acquired the 18th-century Villa Passalacqua in Moltrasio, on the lake's quieter western shore, restored it over roughly four years, and opened it in 2022. A year later it was named number one in the inaugural World's 50 Best Hotels. There are only 24 rooms, spread across the main villa, the lakeside Casa al Lago and the Palazz, so the place reads less like a hotel than a private estate with staff: terraced gardens dropping to the water, a freshwater pool set in the garden, and the atmosphere of the rooms where composer Vincenzo Bellini once stayed and worked. The honest caveat for a proposal is exposure: with two dozen rooms and attentive staff everywhere, a poolside or garden moment is rarely truly private, so the surest setting is your own terrace or a booked boat. Best for couples who want romance at estate scale rather than a crowd.
Request Casa al Lago, the standalone lakeside building with its own pool, for the most private stay; or a grand suite in the main villa for the classic lake view at a lower rate.
Have the team set the proposal on a private Riva cruise at sunset, or on your own terrace rather than a shared garden. A night paired at the family's Grand Hotel Tremezzo extends the trip, and the day-after boat to Villa del Balbianello is the obvious next morning.
Passalacqua sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Lake Como for a Proposal list. It scored an aggregate 9.9/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a proposal-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Lake Como neighbourhood, see Moltrasio (southwestern shore) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
If you have already chosen the dates, our editor recommends booking the room twelve weeks ahead. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
