Quieter Baa Atoll, biosphere-reserve diving, less press, the last-discovery honeymoon.
"Quieter Baa Atoll, biosphere-reserve diving, less press, the last-discovery honeymoon."
Vakkaru Maldives opened in 2018 as the quieter, more discreet alternative to the high-profile Baa Atoll resorts (Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa, Anantara Kihavah). The resort sits on a small private island in the same UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with the same access to Hanifaru Bay manta-ray season and the same calibre of house reef. Cuisine and design are both intentionally understated, the architecture is conventional Maldivian thatched roof and woven cane, the operating brand (Pegasus Hotels) does not advertise heavily, and the result is a resort that few first-time Maldives honeymoon couples have heard of. Hundred and twenty-five villas, all with private outdoor space, the upper tiers with private pools. The Lagoon Reef Pool Villa (overwater, with private pool, sunset orientation) is the strongest honeymoon pick. Vakkaru is the right pick for the honeymoon couple who wants Baa-Atoll-standard reef and biosphere access but pays significantly less than the higher-profile resorts in the same atoll. The trade-off is brand recognition (you will spend the rest of your life explaining where you went) and a slightly less polished operating standard than the Soneva or Four Seasons properties.
Lagoon Reef Pool Villa or Sunset Pool Beach Villa, both with private pools, both honeymoon-priced.
If your dates fall in manta season (June through October), Vakkaru runs the same Hanifaru Bay excursions as the larger resorts at a lower price point, book a private boat for day two. Reserve the in-villa floating breakfast for the second morning.
Vakkaru Maldives sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in the Maldives for a Honeymoon list. It scored an aggregate 9.5/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a honeymoon-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Maldives neighbourhood, see Baa Atoll and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
Have firm dates? Our editor's advice is to book roughly twelve weeks in advance. Rooms with the coveted orientation are claimed first, while popular-month availability runs out months in advance. It is the terrace and plunge-pool suites, the rooms this rank rests on, that book up soonest.
A ranked shortlist, a special offer worth booking, and the overpriced stay to skip. Straight from the editors.
