W Maldives is the resort that brought the W Hotels brand to the Indian Ocean and to a generation of honeymoon couples who wanted the Maldives villa experience and a poolside DJ at the same time. The resort sits on Fesdu Island in North Ari Atoll, 25 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Seventy-eight villas, the upper tier with private pools, the architecture conventional W (white-and-blue, contemporary, more about colour than craftsmanship). The social programme is the differentiator — the daily DJ session at the WET pool deck, the 15 Below underground nightclub (the only nightclub in the Maldives accessible by submarine ladder), the FISH overwater restaurant with the open-air kitchen visible from the beach. AWAY Spa runs the standard W treatment menu plus a Maldives-specific Sun-and-Sand Recovery treatment. W Maldives is the right pick for the honeymoon couple in their twenties or thirties who finds Soneva too earnest and wants the social-resort version of the Maldives villa experience.
