Art-driven, every villa hosts a commissioned artwork, the spa is treehouse-perched.
"The Maldives' first art-immersive resort, where 73 pool villas double as a gallery and the spa hangs in the treetops."
Why this rank: Joali Maldives opened in November 2018 on Muravandhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane from Male. Its 73 pool villas, led by the Three-Bedroom Beach Residence, the Over-Water Villa with Pool and the Sunset Water Villa, sit inside the country's first art-immersive resort: commissioned, site-specific work by artists including Porky Hefer, Misha Kahn and Carla Fernandez, crowned by Hefer's Manta Ray Treehouse. Dining spans Saoke (Nikkei and Japanese, over-water), the all-day Vandhoo and Mura Bar on the jetty, with a spa by ESPA. That art-led identity is what separates Joali from the more conventional ultra-luxury Maldives properties, and it is best for the design-minded traveller; the trade-off is that guests indifferent to the art are paying for a concept they won't use.
Best room: Three-Bedroom Beach Residence with private pool
"Art-driven, every villa hosts a commissioned artwork, the spa is treehouse-perched."
Joali Maldives opened in 2018 as the Maldives' first art-driven resort. Owner Esin Güral Argat commissioned artists from around the world to create site-specific works across the island, and every villa hosts at least one major piece; the resort is curated as a serious contemporary-art exhibition that happens to also be a hotel. Seventy-three villas, all with private pools. The architecture is by Autoban, the Istanbul firm, with Turkish craftsmanship throughout. The signature asset is the Manta Ray Treehouse, a spa pavilion suspended in the canopy with the treatment room overlooking the manta cleaning station in the lagoon below; the Sunset Beach Manta Ray Lounge is an over-water social space with a manta-ray-shape pool. Dining is led by Bellinis (Italian), Saoke (Japanese, with one of the strongest sushi programmes in the Maldives) and the all-day Vandhoo. Joali is the right pick for the traveller who cares about contemporary design and art, the property is built to be looked at, slowly, room by room, and a less natural fit for anyone who simply wants sand and silence.
Beach Villa with Pool (for the art programme integrated with the architecture) or Sunset Luxury Water Villa with Pool (for the sunset orientation).
Book the Manta Ray Treehouse couples' treatment for an afternoon when the manta cleaning station is active, the treatment room overlooks the rays. The art tour with the resort's curator is a free programme; book for day two.
Joali Maldives sits within our Top 20 Hotels in the Maldives 2026 list, scoring an aggregate 9.7/10 across our three editorial criteria. It holds its own against the field, but it is the art-immersion above, not the beach or the over-water staples, that earns the rank. For nearby alternatives, see the rest of the Raa Atoll field and the related Maldives lists below.
Have firm dates? Our editor's advice is to book roughly twelve weeks in advance. Suites with the prime view angle sell through first; for peak months, availability is measured in months rather than weeks. The plunge-pool and terrace suites, the categories that justify this ranking, tend to sell out before anything else.
Editorial · #8 on the Top 20 Hotels in the Maldives 2026 list
Joali Maldives' case for the Maldives stay is the art-led setting. The 2018 property's defining difference is the commissioned-art programme: artists including Porky Hefer, Misha Kahn and Carla Fernandez have produced site-specific work across the property, crowned by Hefer's Manta Ray Treehouse.
The 73 villas across the property include the Three-Bedroom Beach Residence with private pool, the Over-Water Villa with Pool, and the Sunset Water Villa.
The dining programme includes Saoke (the Asian-fusion over-water restaurant), Vandhoo (the all-day dining), and Mura Bar (the cocktail anchor on the jetty). The ESPA-branded spa runs the wellness anchor. The Raa Atoll seaplane transfer is 45 minutes from Male. The art-led format is the structural difference from the more conventional ultra-luxury Maldives properties: the commissioned-art collection runs as the property's positioning rather than as an adjunct. The companion property Joali Being (a wellness-only sister resort) extends the brand offering. Best for the art-and-design-led Maldives stay.
