L'Auberge de Sedona opened in 1984 on the banks of Oak Creek just north of Uptown, and it is the only luxury resort in Sedona with cottages built right on the water, which is exactly why it works as a wellness retreat: you wake to the sound of the creek rather than a parking lot. The accommodation splits between lodge rooms and freestanding creekside cottages, the latter with private decks a few feet from the running water, wood-burning fireplaces and outdoor cedar showers. Wellness is built into the setting and the L'Apothecary Spa, and Cress on Oak Creek serves contemporary French-American cooking in a glass-walled room over the stream. The honest catch is the layout: the lodge rooms set back from the water miss the creek soundtrack you are really paying for, so the creekside cottages are the ones worth booking.
