Casa Malca is the art-lover's choice in Tulum, less a wellness retreat than a design statement you sleep inside. The New York gallerist Lio Malca opened it in 2015 in a beachfront mansion on the Tulum hotel road, long rumoured to have belonged to Pablo Escobar, and hung it with his contemporary-art collection: works by artists such as KAWS, Keith Haring, and Damien Hirst run through the public rooms and guest rooms. The signature space is Philosophy, the restaurant set in a former basement with the swimming pool forming its glass ceiling. Two honest caveats. First, this is an art-and-design hotel, not a clinical wellness resort, so come for the setting and the food rather than a full spa programme. Second, the Tulum beach road is the real catch: seasonal sargassum seaweed, the occasional power or water hiccup, and a transfer of about 90 minutes from Cancún (or roughly 30 from the newer Tulum airport). At $800-plus a night you are paying for a property nothing else in Tulum resembles. For a creative, design-minded group, that is the appeal.

Walk the art collection through the public spaces on your first afternoon, then book Philosophy for dinner, where the pool forms the ceiling. Check the seaweed forecast before you travel and pack accordingly; the open Caribbean here is not always swimmable.
