Helvetia & Bristol Firenze

An 89-room historic hotel in central Florence, welcoming guests since 1885 and home to the Cibreo restaurant.

The Helvetia & Bristol has been a Florence address since 1885, and today it pairs that heritage with the celebrated Cibreo restaurant and the largest spa in the historic centre. For an anniversary it is the warm, central, classic choice, with one trade-off: it is tucked among the streets near Via Tornabuoni, so there are no sweeping Duomo or river views.

Why Helvetia & Bristol Firenze for an anniversary

The Helvetia & Bristol has welcomed guests since 1885, when Florence was a fixture on the Grand Tour, and it remains one of the city's most atmospheric historic hotels, now part of the Starhotels Collezione. Its 89 rooms are split across two wings: the original Helvetia wing, restored and hung with art, and the newer Bristol wing designed by Anouska Hempel. The hotel's calling card for an anniversary is dining and pampering close at hand: the celebrated Cibreo has a restaurant and cocktail bar here, an offshoot of the Florentine institution, and the basement holds a 550-square-metre spa, the largest in the historic centre. The location, just off Via Tornabuoni and a few minutes from the Duomo and the Arno, puts the whole city on foot. The honest caveat is the setting itself: this is an interior, historic-quarter hotel without sweeping views, smaller and quieter than the grand palace hotels, and the most understated of Florence's luxury options. You come for the heritage, the food and the spa rather than for a panorama.

Best room to request

Request a room in the original Helvetia wing for the period character; the Bristol wing is the newer Anouska Hempel addition if you prefer a more contemporary look.

Concierge tip

Book Cibreo for the anniversary dinner and start with cocktails in its bar beforehand. Leave the next morning for the spa downstairs, then walk to the Duomo and the Arno, both only a few minutes away.

The wider context

Helvetia & Bristol Firenze sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Tuscany for an Anniversary list. It scored an aggregate 9.5/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on an anniversary-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Tuscany neighbourhood, see Florence (Via dei Pescioni, historic centre) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.

Have firm dates? Our editor's advice is to book roughly twelve weeks in advance. The suites and the quieter courtyard-facing rooms go first, and Florence's peak months sell out well ahead.
