"The Habitas tented community on Tulum's beach: a sustainability-led Tulum wellness retreat."

9.4Room & Design
9.6Service
9.6Location

Why this rank: Habitas Tulum opened in 2017 on Tulum's hotel zone beach, a sustainability-led tented-camp model that Habitas has since expanded to Mexico City, Namibia, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. 32 tented suites and casitas across the property. The wellness programming runs through the Habitas curriculum, with daily yoga in the beachfront pavilion, sound bathing, breathwork, and the property's signature temazcal sweat-lodge sessions led by Mayan-tradition practitioners. The kitchen runs a plant-forward menu aligned with the wellness curriculum. The Habitas Tulum community programme (the property runs as a community rather than a hotel, with daily-rhythm activities that guests participate in collectively) is the difference from the more conventional Tulum beach hotels. Best for the Tulum wellness stay at this sustainability-and-community-led tented camp.

Why Habitas Tulum for a wellness retreat

Habitas Tulum earns its place for a particular kind of wellness traveller: it is a beachfront community built around shared experience rather than a spa-and-treatment resort. Opened in 2017 as the first Our Habitas property (the group has since grown to Bacalar, AlUla in Saudi Arabia, Namibia and Mexico's Costalegre), it has just 32 canvas-and-thatch tents, among the smallest counts of the major Tulum beach hotels, each with a private patio and direct beach access. The draw is the programme: sound baths and morning movement, guided ceremonies and breathwork, communal dinners at long tables where you eat with other guests, and DJ sets on the sand that tip it toward the festival end of wellness. It rewards a multi-night stay and an open, social mindset more than anyone after privacy. The honest trade-off: the tents are simple, the music-and-community format is not for everyone, and Tulum's beach road brings noise and the odd power quirk. It suits solo travellers and couples who want connection, ceremony and a scene over polished seclusion.

Best room to request

A Beachfront tent for the ocean and the sound of the surf, or a Garden tent as the value option.

Concierge tip

Book the morning sound bath and any ceremony early, as they fill up. Treat the communal dinner as the social centre of the stay, and check which nights have DJ sets, to plan around them either way.

The wider context

Habitas Tulum sits within our broader Top 20 Wellness Retreat Hotels list. It scored an aggregate 9.6/10 across our three editorial criteria, competitive against the field, but on wellness-specific factors the case above is what earned its rank. For alternatives nearby, the Tulum beach zone has several options; for a different setting entirely, see the related lists below.

If you have already chosen the dates, our editor recommends booking the room twelve weeks ahead. The view-facing suites disappear earliest, and high-season inventory moves on a timescale of months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.

Why this hotel works for a wellness retreat

Editorial · #13 on the Top 20 Wellness Retreat Hotels 2026 list

Habitas Tulum's case for the wellness retreat is the sustainability-and-community-led tented camp format. The 2018 property opened on Tulum's hotel zone beach as the founding Habitas property; the brand has since expanded to Mexico City, Namibia, Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

The Habitas curriculum runs through daily yoga in the beachfront pavilion, sound bathing, breathwork, and the property's signature temazcal sweat-lodge sessions led by Mayan-tradition practitioners. The kitchen runs a plant-forward menu aligned with the wellness curriculum.

The Habitas Tulum community programme is the difference from the more conventional Tulum beach hotels: the property runs as a community rather than a hotel, with daily-rhythm activities that guests participate in collectively. The 32-tent property scale combined with the community programming produces a different wellness register from the property-only retreats. The tents include private outdoor showers and beach-facing terraces. The Tulum hotel-zone beachfront position is structural: the sound of the ocean is the property's permanent acoustic background. Best for the Tulum wellness stay at this sustainability-and-community-led tented camp.
