The Caribbean is the closest serious honeymoon destination for North Americans wanting a beach. The flight is short, the weather is reliable, and the strongest islands have hotel inventory comparable to anywhere in the world.
The serious Caribbean honeymoon islands cluster into two groups: the Leeward Islands (St Barths, Anguilla, Antigua, St Kitts) and the larger Caribbean (Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas). The picks below are the Leewards-leaning shortlist, with selected larger-island additions.
St Barths: the small-island Caribbean
St Barths (Saint-Barthélemy) is the Caribbean island that has held its position as the elite honeymoon destination for fifty years. The runway is famously short, the flight from St Maarten is twelve minutes, and the island is small enough that you can drive its perimeter in an hour.
Le Toiny, on the south coast, is the senior pick. Twenty-two villas, each with a private pool, on the most secluded beach on the island. The aesthetic is contemporary French Caribbean.
Cheval Blanc Saint-Barth Isle de France, on Flamands Beach, is the LVMH property and the more polished alternative. The beach is one of the best on the island; the villas are spread across a beachfront garden.
Eden Rock St Barths, the original luxury hotel on the island, has been rebuilt twice (after 2017 hurricane damage) and remains the most-photographed property on St Barths. The cottages on the rocky promontory have unmatched views.
Hotel Le Sereno (Grand Cul de Sac) and Le Carl Gustaf (Gustavia) are the credible secondary picks.
Anguilla: the long beach honeymoon
Anguilla is the comparable Caribbean island to St Barths in terms of luxury hotel quality, but with a different geography — flat, with miles of white beach.
Belmond Cap Juluca, on Maundays Bay, is the senior pick. The Moorish architecture, the long beach (one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean), and the recent Belmond renovation produce a serious honeymoon hotel.
Four Seasons Resort Anguilla, on Barnes Bay, is the more contemporary alternative. The villas have private pools and beach access.
Aurora Anguilla Resort, on Rendezvous Bay, has emerged as the third pick — owned by the Auberge group as of 2024.
Antigua: the value pick
Antigua's hotel inventory does not match St Barths or Anguilla, but the value is dramatically better. Couples who want a serious Caribbean honeymoon at a tier below the elite islands should consider Antigua.
Jumby Bay Island, an Oetker Collection property on a private island, is the senior pick. Forty rooms, each with a private suite or villa, and the only access is by hotel boat from Antigua.
Hermitage Bay, on the southwest coast, is the boutique alternative — twenty-five suites, a long beach, and a reputation for personal service that is hard to match.
Jamaica: the larger-island honeymoon
Jamaica is the underrated Caribbean honeymoon destination. The hotel inventory is strong, the music and food culture are unmatched, and the prices are 30% below the Leeward Islands for comparable quality.
Round Hill Hotel and Villas, in Montego Bay, is the senior Jamaican pick. The villas were used by Ralph Lauren and Paul McCartney as bases. The setting on a 110-acre former plantation is exceptional.
The Caves, in Negril, is the boutique pick — ten cottages on the cliffs above the ocean.
GoldenEye, Ian Fleming's former Jamaica home turned hotel, is the wildcard. The cottages and villas are spread across a property where Fleming wrote all the James Bond novels.
The Caribbean honeymoon is the trip where the beach matters more than the hotel. Choose the beach first, then the property on it.
How to choose
A simple decision framework:
- For elite design and food in a small-island setting — St Barths (Le Toiny or Cheval Blanc)
- For miles of beach and contemporary luxury — Anguilla (Belmond Cap Juluca)
- For serious quality at a better price — Antigua (Jumby Bay)
- For depth and culture — Jamaica (Round Hill or GoldenEye)
The flight time matters. St Barths requires a connection in St Maarten or San Juan and adds half a day to the journey. Anguilla is direct from several US East Coast airports. Jamaica is the easiest to reach from anywhere in the Americas.
When to go
The Caribbean honeymoon season is December through April — the dry season, when the trade winds are reliable and the rainfall is minimal.
May and June are excellent shoulder months. The weather is generally good, the crowds are absent, and the rates are 25-30% below peak.
July through October is hurricane season. Rates are 40-50% below peak, but the weather risk is real. We do not recommend Caribbean honeymoons in this window.
November is the trickiest month — late hurricane risk early in the month, transition to dry season later. By Thanksgiving, the season has effectively started.

The Caribbean honeymoon mistake is the same as the Hawaiian one: staying at the property for the entire trip. The strongest Caribbean honeymoons combine resort time with active exploration.
On St Barths: a private boat day around the island, dinner at one of the small village restaurants, a half-day at one of the secondary beaches (Saline, Gouverneur).
On Anguilla: a sailing trip to the smaller offshore islands, dinner at Veya or Blanchards, a half-day visit to Sandy Island.
On Antigua: a 365-beaches day (the island has a beach for every day of the year), a sailing trip to Barbuda's pink beach.
On Jamaica: a Blue Mountain coffee farm tour, a visit to GoldenEye if not staying there, dinner at one of the chef's-table restaurants in Kingston.
The hotels will arrange all of these. The Caribbean is where the concierge becomes the most important staff member of the trip.
The Caribbean honeymoon weather calendar
The Caribbean honeymoon decision depends heavily on weather risk by month:
- January-March: peak dry season, highest rates, most reliable weather
- April-June: dry, less crowded, rates 20% below peak
- July-October: hurricane season, lowest rates, real weather risk
- November: shoulder season, mixed weather risk early in month
- December: dry season begins, holiday rates 50%+ above standard
The honeymoon couple's typical sweet spot: late April through May or November (avoiding the Christmas peak). These windows offer good weather and rates 25-30% below January-February peak.
What to do beyond the resort on a Caribbean honeymoon
Three excursions that produce stronger memories than another beach day:
- A sailing trip to an offshore island (most Caribbean honeymoon hotels arrange these privately)
- A snorkelling trip to a serious reef (Belize, the British Virgin Islands, parts of St Lucia have world-class reefs)
- A cooking class with a local chef (most islands have chefs who teach in-villa or off-property)
The Caribbean is where most honeymoon couples over-rest and under-explore. Two excursions across a 7-night trip is the right balance.
Caribbean tipping and currency
Caribbean tipping cultures vary dramatically by island:
- US-protectorate islands (USVI, Puerto Rico): standard US tipping (18-22%)
- French islands (St Barths, Martinique, Guadeloupe): service usually included; tip 5-10% extra for excellent service
- Independent Caribbean islands (Jamaica, Antigua, Dominican Republic): standard 15-20% tipping in cash
Most resorts include service charges automatically. Always check the bill before adding to it.
Practical advice
Three practical points for Caribbean honeymooners:
- Pack light. Inter-island flights have strict luggage limits, and most of the trip will be spent in swimwear. One small suitcase is sufficient.
- The best beachfront restaurants on the small islands sell out two weeks ahead in peak season. Pre-book before you arrive.
- The Caribbean tipping culture is different from the US. Tipping is appreciated but not expected at the same level. Hotel restaurants typically include service in the bill; review before tipping again.
