"Executive lounge" varies wildly by brand and property. Some are exceptional. Others are minimum viable. Knowing which is which saves frustration.

What an executive lounge should provide

Continental breakfast (minimum)

Fresh croissants, pastries, fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee. Some properties also have hot items (eggs, bacon).

Afternoon tea / canapés

3-5pm window. Tea, biscuits, sometimes light savories.

Evening hors d'oeuvres

5-7pm window. More substantive — sushi, sliders, small plates. Often includes complimentary wine and beer.

Dedicated workspace

Tables, chairs, ethernet ports, printer access.

Concierge support

Often staffed with a dedicated lounge concierge.

Brand comparison

Ritz-Carlton Club Level

Top-tier executive lounge experience. 5+ food presentations daily. Champagne in evening lounge. Premium tea selection.

Park Hyatt (varies by property)

Some properties have exceptional lounges (Park Hyatt Tokyo, Park Hyatt Vienna). Others minimal.

Mandarin Oriental MO Lounge

Strong but varies by property. Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo are excellent.

Conrad / Hilton Diamond Lounge

Reliable for Hilton elite. Solid food, decent space.

Marriott M Club / Bonvoy

Variable by property. Generally less food than Ritz-Carlton.

Sofitel Club

Strong European hotel club lounge tradition.

Four Seasons (mostly no lounges)

Four Seasons rarely has executive lounges — they emphasise restaurant and room service instead.

Aman (no lounges)

Aman doesn't do executive lounges. Full restaurant access in suite-level booking.

Access patterns

By room type

Executive room or suite booked at the right rate level. Confirm at booking.

By status

Marriott Platinum, Hilton Diamond, Hyatt Globalist all unlock club access at most properties.

By club rate

Pay for upgraded room with lounge access. Cost: $50-$200 per night premium.

What's worth using

Breakfast

If breakfast is included with your room rate, the lounge is the better choice (faster, less overhead).

Afternoon tea / canapés

3-5pm is a great workspace window. Snacks help productivity.

Evening hors d'oeuvres

If you don't have dinner plans, the lounge serves as light dinner.

Workspace

Tables and ethernet are typically better than rooms.

What's not

Heavy meals

Lounge food is usually light. Don't replace dinner with lounge fare.

Quiet workspace

Lounges can be busy at peak times. Rooms remain quieter.

Premium drinks

Lounge wine/beer is typically house-pour. Not bar-quality.

Five rules

  1. Ritz-Carlton Club is the gold standard
  2. Park Hyatt Tokyo, Park Hyatt Vienna are exceptional
  3. Marriott Platinum gets you in most lounges
  4. Use breakfast and evening canapés
  5. Save the room for quiet work
