A status match transfers your top-tier status from one hotel programme to another. The single most-effective tactic for acquiring multiple programmes' status without re-qualifying. The picks below are the active status match opportunities in 2026.
What status match is
The mechanism: programme A grants you their top tier when you provide proof of top tier at programme B. Typically:
- Initial grant: 60-90 days at the matched tier
- Trial qualification: complete N stays during the grant period
- Full status: granted for the remainder of the year + all of the following year
The match is usually a one-time gift. Subsequent retention requires regular stays at the matched programme.

How to plan a status match strategy
Three rules:
Rule 1: time the match for high-volume travel
The match grants 60-90 days of top tier at a new programme. Plan to use this window during a known high-volume travel quarter.
Rule 2: complete the trial qualifications
Most matches require 2-4 stays during the initial grant period. Plan and complete these.
Rule 3: use multiple matches in sequence
A specific high-yield strategy: hold Marriott Platinum (via Brilliant card). Match to Hyatt Globalist. Match to Accor Platinum. Match to IHG Diamond Elite. By the end of one year, hold top tier in 4-5 programmes.
Common match mistakes
Three mistakes to avoid:
Match without trial completion
Some travellers apply for a match and then do not complete the trial stays. The status reverts after the grant period. Do not match if you cannot complete the trial.
Match in low-volume travel quarters
A match during a quarter when you do not travel produces no benefit. Time the match to align with planned travel.
Match without the credit card play
Most matches build on top of credit card status. Without holding a credit card with mid-tier status, the match starts from a weaker position.
Five rules for status match strategy
- Match aggressively when changing primary programmes
- Time matches to high-volume travel quarters
- Complete trial requirements during the grant period
- Stack with credit card status for compound benefit
- Use the Hyatt-from-Marriott match as the standard play (most useful)
