December through April is the season — dry, breezy, hovering in the high seventies, and the snowbird population swells the town's effective size by a third. The Christmas tree on Atlantic Avenue, lit each year through early January, is a seasonal centrepiece worth planning around. March and April bring the Delray Beach Open and the Pickleball Open — over 100,000 fans descend on the city across both events, and downtown hotels sell out months in advance. Spring break overlaps. May through September the humidity arrives, the rates collapse, and the town becomes a different proposition entirely — quieter, hotter, more local. August through October is hurricane season; insurance and flexibility on dates matter more than the rate. November is the connoisseur's month: the snowbirds have not yet arrived, the weather has turned, and the town feels rediscoverable.
Atlantic Avenue downtown is the obvious choice — the boutique-and-restaurant strip that earned Delray its place on Rand McNally's "10 Coolest Small Towns" list, with the densest concentration of bars, galleries, and walkable nightlife between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm. The Seagate, The Colony, and Hampton Inn all anchor here. Pineapple Grove, just north of Atlantic, is the arts district — galleries, the Arts Garage performance venue, and The Ray Hotel as its design centrepiece. Beach Atlantic Avenue (the eastern blocks of A1A) is where the oceanfront properties cluster: Opal Grand, Wright by the Sea, and the public beach itself. Boca Raton peripheral, ten minutes south, suits travellers who want the polish of the Boca Raton Resort within reach but Delray's nightlife at hand. Boynton Beach peripheral, ten minutes north, is the budget overflow — the cheapest mid-range rates in the area, with a fifteen-minute drive into Delray for dinner.
Boutique and resort properties in Delray Beach run from $295 to $695 per night in season, depending on the property, view, and room category. The Seagate, Opal Grand, and The Ray Hotel all sit in the $425–$575 range for a standard room in peak weeks, with suite premiums of 30–50%. Boutique properties like Crane's Beach House and Sundy House anchor the $325–$425 mid-range. Mid-range chains — Hyatt Place, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn — run $195–$285 in season and drop sharply (often 40%) between June and October. Holiday weeks, the Delray Beach Open, the Pickleball Open, and the long Presidents' Day weekend all carry surcharges and minimum-stay requirements of three to four nights.
For peak season — January through March, the Pickleball Open in March, and spring break — book at least four months ahead. The Colony Hotel sells out by November for its peak weeks. Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is the closest gateway at thirty minutes north. Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International (FLL) is thirty minutes south and often cheaper for international connections. Brightline rail runs hourly between West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami — the Boca Raton station is a fifteen-minute Uber from Delray and is a sensible alternative to renting a car if you do not plan to drive between cities. Atlantic Avenue parking is metered and limited; most downtown hotels charge $25–$40 a night for valet. Free trolleys run downtown, and the Avenue itself is two miles end-to-end — most visits are walked, not driven.
American tipping standards apply throughout South Florida. Restaurants: 18–20% on the pre-tax total, with 20% the working assumption at hotel restaurants and bars. Porters: $2–5 per bag. Housekeeping: $5–10 per day, left daily on the pillow. Valet: $3–5 on retrieval. Concierge: $10–20 for hard-to-secure dinner reservations or theatre tickets. Cabana attendants at the Seagate or Opal Grand beach clubs: $5–10 on each visit, more on the final day if service has been consistent. Spa treatments include gratuity in the menu price at some properties and exclude it at others — always confirm at booking.
