A 35-room family-owned heritage hotel on Connaught Drive, opened in 1925 by the Andrew family and run by the third and fourth generations today, with Papa George's Restaurant and the De'd Dog Bar on the ground floor and one of the most central addresses in town.
"Four generations of the Andrew family, the original 1925 boutique on Connaught Drive, and the rare downtown Jasper room that has actually been somewhere. Papa George's downstairs is the best long-running restaurant in town."
The Astoria is the oldest hotel in Jasper. The Andrew family opened it in 1925, two decades after the railway reached the townsite, and four generations have continuously owned and operated the property since. The current building, a charming three-storey European-styled inn faced in stone and timber, sits in the centre of Connaught Drive, across from the Jasper Information Centre and one block from the rail station. It is the single most central hotel address in the village.
The 35 rooms are arranged on three floors above the restaurant and bar. The interior carries the quiet character that 100 years of continuous family ownership delivers: dark wood headboards, restrained patterned wallpaper, brass fittings, modest furniture proportions, and a small but well-curated set of historic photographs through the public corridors. Rooms run from snug standard doubles on the lower floors to larger family rooms at the back; bathrooms have been progressively modernised but retain the original layouts. Every room has climate control, a flat-screen TV, coffee facilities, and the wood-frame windows look out onto Connaught Drive or the small parking court at the rear.
Papa George's Restaurant, on the Astoria ground floor since 1986, is the most reliably good long-running restaurant in Jasper. The kitchen runs a tight modern Canadian menu (Alberta beef, regional trout, elk in season) and the room itself, white tablecloths, dim lights, and an older clientele, is the Jasper dinner that feels most like an occasion. The De'd Dog Bar, on the same floor through a side door, is the town's most charming pub: low ceilings, a long wood bar, a fireplace, a deep tap list including local Jasper Brewing Co., and the kind of room where solo travellers can sit at the bar and have a conversation by 9pm.
Service at the Astoria is the property's defining note. The front desk is most often staffed by family members, the housekeeping team has been with the property for years, and the operating signature is that guests are recognised by name within the first day. Amenities are restrained: WiFi is free and reliable, parking is free and on site, there is no pool or spa, and the property does not run a concierge desk in the modern sense (the desk simply tells you what to do and where to eat, which is more useful).
The Astoria is the solo Jasper booking. The position on Connaught Drive puts everything within four minutes on foot; the De'd Dog Bar is the rare Jasper room where eating alone at the bar reads as natural rather than as remarkable; Papa George's handles solo dining quietly and well; and the rooms are properly furnished for a long evening with a book. Book a standard king on the second floor for the best balance of light and quiet, and use the property as the small, well-run village hotel it is.
For a Jasper anniversary that wants character over chrome, the Astoria is a quietly excellent answer. The hotel is the only one in town that meaningfully predates the postwar tourism era; the family-owned operation reads warmly across two nights; and Papa George's downstairs is the right restaurant for the evening itself. Book the largest room category available, request a quiet rear-facing room, and the property delivers an unfussy anniversary stay that the village's larger hotels structurally cannot match.
