The Hotel

Lobstick Lodge is the value-tier sibling of Chateau Jasper, two doors down on Geikie Street and run by the same Pursuit Banff Jasper Collection group. The 139-room property sits in a secluded pocket at the east end of the village with mature evergreens on three sides, which gives the lodge the quietest setting of any in-town Jasper hotel of its size. The trade is that the room product is older and less ambitiously refurbished than at Chateau Jasper, which is reflected in the rate.

The 139 rooms run across three floors and four main categories. Standard kings and two-queen rooms make up the bulk of the inventory, with a hospitality king category that adds extra square footage, and a substantial 43-room block of full-kitchen suites. The full-kitchen units include a refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, and basic cookware, and are the booking to make for any stay of three nights or more (or for families who want lunch on the trail without the daily restaurant visit). Bathrooms are functional rather than aspirational; the look is best described as a comfortable, well-maintained mid-1990s Rockies hotel.

Dining is light: a continental breakfast bar serves through the morning, and a small lobby lounge handles drinks in the evening. There is no full restaurant on site; the property's location does put the Patricia Street restaurant district about a 12 minute walk away, and the on-site activity desk handles dinner reservations on request. The Silverwater Grill at Chateau Jasper is a 90-second walk through the parking court if guests want a full dining room in the same group.

The indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub keep extended hours (7am to 10pm), and the configuration includes a small kiddie pool that the larger Jasper hotels do not offer. There is a guest laundry, a small fitness room, free WiFi, free on-site parking, and a no-charge shuttle to Marmot Basin in winter. Pet-friendly rooms are available on request. The hotel's east-end position is a 12 to 14 minute walk to the rail station and Patricia Street, which is the principal reason the rate runs 20 to 30 percent below comparable Connaught Drive properties.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

Lobstick Lodge is the value-tier Jasper family booking. The full-kitchen rooms remove the daily restaurant overhead; the pool runs late enough to handle the after-Maligne-Lake swim; the secluded setting at the back of town means the kids sleep properly; the parking is free and on site; and the winter shuttle to Marmot Basin runs without charge. For families of four to six on a six-night Rockies itinerary, the kitchen room here is roughly 35 percent cheaper than a comparable Chateau Jasper or Forest Park stay.
