The Maasai Mara Hotel Guide: Everything You Need to Know

When to Visit

July–October is the Great Migration peak — wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River from the Serengeti, the most dramatic wildlife event on earth. Book 9–12 months ahead. November–March is calving season in the southern Serengeti (calves move into the Mara from January). April–June is wettest but greenest with newborn animals; rates 30–40% lower.

Best Neighborhoods to Stay

Mara Triangle in the western section of the reserve has the highest leopard density and migration river crossings — Bateleur, Kichwa Tembo. Olare Motorogi Conservancy north of the reserve allows night drives — Mara Plains, Mahali Mzuri. Mara River area for migration crossings — Olonana, Rekero, Governors' Il Moran. Oloololo Escarpment for elevated views — Angama Mara. Olderkesi for Cottar's 1920s.

Average Prices & What to Expect

Maasai Mara's top tier runs $1,500–$2,500 per person per night, all-inclusive. Angama, Bateleur, Mara Plains reach $2,500–$3,000. Premium migration weeks (mid-August–September) are 30–50% above standard. All-inclusive includes meals, drinks, two daily game drives.

Getting Around

SafariLink and Air Kenya operate scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to multiple Mara airstrips (45 minutes). Flights cost $250–$400 each way. Lodge transfers from airstrip are typically included. Driving from Nairobi takes 5–6 hours.

Booking Tips

Book major lodges 6–9 months ahead for July–October migration. Christmas/New Year's books 12+ months ahead. Cancellation windows are 60–90 days. Tipping is significant — $20–$30 per guest per day for guides, plus camp staff.

Also Worth Considering

Sabi Sand
South Africa

Six hours by air. The South African safari alternative — different ecosystem, equivalent quality.

Serengeti
Tanzania

45 minutes by air. The Tanzanian side of the same migration — different country, same animals.

Zanzibar
Tanzania

Three hours by air. The natural Mara-and-Zanzibar safari-and-beach pairing.

Cape Town
South Africa

Six hours by air. The Cape Town and safari combination for a longer Africa trip.
