The Hotel

The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach occupies the restored DiLido — Morris Lapidus's 1953 oceanfront commission, listed on the National Register of Historic Places — at 1 Lincoln Road. The building is one of two surviving examples of Lapidus's MiMo (Miami Modern) commercial work in the city; the other, the Fontainebleau, sits ten blocks north. Ritz-Carlton acquired and rebuilt the property in 2003 with architectural conservation that preserved the curved staircases, bullnose corners, and the sky-bridge entrance Lapidus designed. The 2018 redesign by Roman & Williams replaced the brand's standard Edwardian palette with a calmer, more deco-respectful interior — bleached oak, terrazzo, brass, and a colour scheme that lets the Lapidus architecture speak.

The 376 rooms run from 376-square-foot Deluxe Rooms to the 2,500-square-foot Beach Tower Suite. Most rooms have private balconies; ocean-view rooms face directly east; pool-view rooms face west across the deck. The redesigned bathrooms run in white marble with separate tubs and rain showers. The Club Floor — accessed via a separate elevator — adds a private lounge with five food presentations a day, the most useful concierge desk in Miami for restaurant access, and a reading room with the kind of quiet that the rest of South Beach cannot deliver.

DiLido Beach Club, the oceanfront restaurant, is the anchor amenity. The space — a 200-seat indoor-outdoor pavilion looking onto the beach — runs an Italian-Mediterranean menu that has stayed consistent through the brand's various culinary directors. The pool deck operates two distinct zones: the lower pool (family) and the upper pool (adults), both with full beach service. The Lapis Spa, recently expanded, runs a treatment menu that emphasises the brand's signature service standards more than experimental therapy. The fitness centre is fully equipped; group classes are limited; the in-room Peloton offering is reliable.

Service is the most consistent variable on the property, and it is the reason the hotel commands the rates it does. The Ritz-Carlton brand standards — predictable check-in, the empowered front desk, the courtesies that don't need to be requested — are delivered here at the level the brand achieves at its best properties. The location, at the southern end of Collins Avenue at the head of Lincoln Road, is the most walkable address in Miami's luxury inventory: ten minutes to Ocean Drive, on the doorstep of Lincoln Road's restaurants, and a fifteen-minute walk to the Joe's Stone Crab end of South Beach.

Best for Anniversary

For a milestone anniversary, the Ritz-Carlton offers the combination that other South Beach hotels split: a property worth being in, a service standard that takes celebrations seriously, and a location that doesn't require a car. The Beach Tower Suite has a private terrace with the best ocean view on the property. The hotel's anniversary programme — flowers in the room on arrival, a private dinner setup at DiLido Beach Club, the spa's couples ritual — is well-rehearsed and not improvised. The Lapidus architecture itself does what theme park hotels try and fail to do: it makes the trip feel like an occasion. Other anniversary hotels →
