"The 16th-century vaulted breakfast room was once an abbey chapter house. Some of Paris's best hotels don't need to announce what they are — the stone does it for them."

About Relais Christine

The Relais Christine occupies the site of a 13th-century Augustinian abbey on Rue Christine, a short street in Saint-Germain-des-Prés that most visitors to Paris never find. The approach is through a courtyard — ivy-covered walls, cobblestones, the specific quiet of a building that has been quietly absorbing the city's noise for eight centuries. The hotel that operates within it maintains this character with admirable restraint.

Forty-eight rooms and suites occupy the original abbey buildings and a connected mansion. The range is genuine: antiques, cosy velvet, warm woodwork, Toile de Jouy print in some rooms, canopy beds in others, and Carrara marble bathrooms throughout. The exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings are not decorative additions but original fabric. The hotel's renovation kept these elements central rather than incidental. The result is a hotel that feels genuinely ancient rather than artificially aged.

Breakfast is served in the vaulted stone room that served the abbey as its chapter house, a space that no amount of architectural investment could reproduce and which the hotel has simply made comfortable without attempting to improve. A private garage is available — a rare and meaningful amenity in the 6th arrondissement. The spa, added during renovation, includes a hammam and treatment rooms that the original Augustinians would not have anticipated but would likely have approved of.

The neighbourhood is Saint-Germain at its least theatrical. Rue Christine is a short walk from the Seine, from the bouquinistes on the Quai de Conti, and from the covered passages that connect Rue Dauphine to Rue de Buci. The Musée d'Orsay is fifteen minutes on foot. Notre-Dame, under its post-fire reconstruction, is visible from the quai if you walk the right direction. This is Paris as a city to inhabit, not a city to photograph.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The Relais Christine offers the honeymoon Paris that exists before the monuments — the courtyard hotel on the quiet street, the vaulted breakfast room at 8am, the walk to the Seine before the tourists arrive. Book a canopy suite and tell the hotel it's your first night in Paris. The staff understand what that means.

Anniversary

For anniversaries where the setting must feel genuinely earned — where 800 years of stone and a courtyard garden matter more than a pool view — the Relais Christine is the Left Bank's most compelling argument. The private garage means arriving with luggage is dignified. The hammam means the afternoon is private.

Solo Retreat

The Relais Christine is where writers stay when they want to disappear without actually leaving Paris. The abbey building absorbs sound. The staff are discreet. The neighbourhood offers the most interesting walking in the city. Breakfast alone in the vaulted chapter house with a pot of good coffee is a pleasure that requires no company to complete.
