The Hotel

The Hotel del Coronado — 'The Del' — opened in 1888 on Coronado Island and is the most historically significant hotel in Southern California. The Victorian gingerbread exterior, painted white with red trim, anchors two miles of the most filmed beach in San Diego County. L. Frank Baum stayed here and was reportedly inspired by the building's architecture for the Emerald City. Marilyn Monroe filmed Some Like It Hot on the beach directly in front. Every President from Benjamin Harrison to Barack Obama has visited.

The 757 rooms occupy the original 1888 building, the 1970s California Cabana complex, and the 2009 Beach Village at The Del — a collection of oceanfront cottages with private patios and the most direct beach access of the three building groups. The Victorian Building rooms have the architecture; the Beach Village rooms have the ocean position. The Spa at The Del is a full-service facility within the Victorian Building.

The hotel's eight dining and drinking venues span from the 1500 OCEAN fine dining room, with its ocean views and farm-to-table California menu, to the Sun Deck casual bar that serves the beach. The property's scale — 757 rooms across 33 acres — makes it the most complete resort south of the Montage Laguna Beach, and the combination of historic architecture and beach resort infrastructure is unique in California.

Best for Anniversary

The Hotel del Coronado anniversary is for couples who want the most historically charged beach hotel in California. The Victorian Building's turret rooms, the beach dinner arrangement, and the hotel's century of anniversary management produce a milestone stay that the newer California resorts cannot replicate through architecture alone. The Coronado ferry from downtown provides the most dramatic hotel arrival in San Diego. See all anniversary hotels →

Best for Family Holiday

The Del's beach, its children's programme (Coconut Cove), the three pools, and the Beach Village cottage configuration make it the finest family resort in San Diego County. The Coronado Island location — accessible by bridge or the 15-minute downtown ferry — provides an island-resort sense of separation without the logistics of an actual island destination.
