"16-yurt cliffside glamping resort with unique structures like the Human Nest, Big Sur's best-known glamping retreat."
Treebones Resort is a family-owned glamping retreat perched on a bluff above the Pacific in south Big Sur, near Lucia. The core is 16 ocean-view yurts, canvas-domed, wood-floored, heated, with decks over the coast, alongside a handful of one-of-a-kind structures, including the much-photographed Human Nest, a hand-woven redwood pod reached by a short path, and autonomous tents for a more enclosed stay. For a solo retreat the appeal is solitude and the view: a clifftop heated pool and hot tub, walking trails on the property, and cliffside dining at the Wild Coast restaurant and its intimate omakase sushi bar. The honest trade-off is that this is real glamping, not a hotel: most yurts have no private bathroom, so you walk to a shared bathhouse, there are no TVs or in-room plumbing, the coast is often cool and foggy, and the nearest town is a long drive on Highway 1. Come for digital quiet and the Pacific, not for luxury-hotel comforts; book an ocean-view yurt and reserve dinner when you book the room.
For a solo stay, an ocean-view yurt on the outer edge of the bluff is the one to request, you get the Pacific from your deck and the most privacy. The Human Nest and Twig Hut are a fun novelty but very basic (no power or bathroom); book one only if roughing it for the view is the whole point of the trip.
Book the Wild Coast sushi bar well ahead, it is tiny and fills fast, and bring layers, because the bluff turns cold and foggy after sunset even in summer. Fill the tank before you arrive; gas and groceries are a long way off on Highway 1.
Treebones Resort sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Big Sur for a Solo Retreat list. It scored an aggregate 9.1/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a solo retreat-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Big Sur neighbourhood, see Big Sur (south coast Lucia) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
If the dates are locked in, secure the room around the three-month mark. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. Suites with a private plunge pool or terrace, the very rooms behind this rank, usually vanish first.
