Deetjen's Big Sur Inn opened when Highway 1 reached Big Sur in 1937, and it is still the coast's most atmospheric low-key choice for a solo traveller. Helmuth Deetjen hand-built the redwood cottages in a Norwegian style, and the 20 rooms are scattered through the trees along Castro Canyon Creek. There is no Wi-Fi, no television and no phone in the rooms by design, which is the whole point of coming alone: you read, you walk, you sleep to the sound of the water. The restaurant in the original 1937 building serves candlelit breakfasts and dinners, so you never have to drive out for a meal. The honest caveat is that this is rustic, not plush. Walls are thin, the cheapest rooms share a bathroom, and there is no pool or spa. Come for character and silence, not for comfort.
