The Twelve Apostles

Oudekraal, Atlantic Seaboard  ·  from EUR 610/night

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa stands alone on Victoria Road in Oudekraal, inside the UNESCO Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site, with the mountain range behind it and the open Atlantic in front. Its 70 rooms and suites, heated infinity pool and mountainside rock pool make it the most dramatic setting on this list.

"Alone on the coast road inside a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a heated infinity pool, a mountainside rock pool and whales from the terrace."

What makes The Twelve Apostles special?

The setting is the product. The Twelve Apostles is the only hotel on this list built inside the UNESCO Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site, flanked by Table Mountain National Park and the Twelve Apostles mountain range that gives it its name, with nothing between the building and the ocean but Victoria Road. Table Mountain National Park hiking trails start at the door, and in season whales are watched from the Leopard Bar terrace. Get the geography right, because the postal address misleads. The hotel is in Oudekraal, on the coast road between Camps Bay and Llandudno, roughly 10 minutes' drive south of Camps Bay beach, alone on the coastline rather than in a beach suburb. That isolation is the point for some guests and the deal-breaker for others. It is family-run at ownership level, part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection under the Tollman family, and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It is listed in the Michelin Guide hotel selection. Michelin does not award restaurant stars anywhere in Africa, so Azure, the flagship restaurant, has no star and cannot have one. Other extras include a private cinema, a scheduled shuttle to Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront, and helicopter transfers.

Which room should you book?

The Twelve Apostles has 70 rooms and suites, including a Presidential Suite, and the category you book decides whether you see the Atlantic. Classic, Milkwood and Deluxe Rooms are all 33 square metres. Milkwood Rooms are adults only. Upper Deluxe Rooms have mountain-facing balconies and ground-floor Deluxe Rooms open onto the fynbos gardens. Luxury Rooms step up to 40 square metres with private terraces. The sea comes in at Junior Sea Facing Suite level, 55 square metres with a sunken lounge and a sea-facing balcony, and continues through One Bedroom Suites and One Bedroom Sea Facing Suites, both 70 square metres. Read that ladder before booking. The view that sells the hotel in photographs belongs to the sea-facing suites, which cost roughly double the entry rooms, and the 33 square metre entry categories mostly face the mountain or the gardens. Mountain-facing is genuinely beautiful here because the mountain is the Twelve Apostles range, but it is not the Atlantic panorama buyers usually picture.

Where should you eat and drink?

Three outlets, and the flagship is Azure. Azure serves contemporary Cape cuisine, locally sourced and seasonal, in a room with full-length Atlantic views, and it is legitimately one of South Africa's leading hotel restaurants. The Cafe Grill is the casual option and also services both pools, which matters at a property where you may not want to leave the terrace. The Leopard Bar handles cocktails and afternoon tea, and its terrace doubles as a whale-watching platform in season. Two things to be clear about. Michelin does not operate a restaurant guide anywhere in Africa, so Azure has no star and cannot have one, whatever a third-party page tells you. We have also not verified an Eat Out Top 10 place or a World's 50 Best listing for Azure, so we do not claim one. The legitimate national benchmarks in South Africa are the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards and the World's 50 Best extended list, and the honest position is that Azure's reputation rests on the cooking and the view rather than on a trophy we can point to.

What is the spa and pool like?

Wellness here is split between two pools and a spa that uses the mountain. The heated infinity pool overlooks the Atlantic, and a second rock pool is cut into the mountainside with mountain views and a heated jacuzzi; both are outdoor, and both are served by The Cafe Grill. A fully serviced tanning deck and ten hammocks in the fynbos gardens complete the outdoor layer. The award-winning Twelve Apostles Spa has seven treatment rooms, a tranquility lounge, a Rasul Chamber, hydrotherapy and plunge pools, and a Perfect Finish Tourmaline Salon. The signature booking is one of the two private glass gazebos set on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles range, where the massage happens outdoors on the mountain. Access to the spa pools and the tranquility lounge comes with any treatment booking of R1,450 or more per person, so plan the day around a treatment rather than dropping in.

Where is The Twelve Apostles, and how do you get there?

The address reads Camps Bay but the hotel stands in Oudekraal, on Victoria Road between Camps Bay and Llandudno, about 10 minutes' drive south of Camps Bay beach and alone on the coast road. Table Mountain National Park is on one side, the Twelve Apostles range behind, the Atlantic in front, and the whole site falls inside the UNESCO Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site. Approximate off-peak driving times: the V&A Waterfront is about 14 km, 20 to 25 minutes; the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway about 11 km, 20 minutes; Cape Town International Airport about 32 km, 35 to 45 minutes. Traffic between 07:00 and 09:00 and from 16:00 to 18:30 can double these. A scheduled hotel shuttle runs to Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront, and helicopter transfers to the Waterfront are offered. This stretch is car-dependent by design. Pavements on Victoria Road are limited and there is no walkable route to shops, restaurants or the city, so plan on a car, the shuttle or e-hailing for everything off site.

What do guests consistently say?

Guest feedback here divides on one question: do you want to be alone with the ocean? Those who do rate the setting above everything else in Cape Town, and the recurring praise is for the Atlantic views from Azure and the sea-facing suites, the heated infinity pool, the mountainside rock pool, the spa gazebos on the slopes and the whale watching from the Leopard Bar terrace in season. The Red Carnation service style and touches like the private cinema come up repeatedly. The recurring criticism is isolation. Guests without a car describe feeling stranded, particularly in the evening, because there are no shops, restaurants or pavements nearby and everything is a drive or the scheduled shuttle. The second theme is expectation management on rooms: buyers who book a 33 square metre entry category and expect the sea view that sells the hotel are the most disappointed. The third is weather, since the cheapest months are also the wettest and windiest on this coast.

Honest cons: who should skip it?

Three honest limitations, all of them structural. First, isolation and car dependence. The hotel sits on a coastal road with no shops, no restaurants and no pavements nearby, so everything off site is a drive or the scheduled shuttle. Guests who arrive without a car repeatedly describe feeling stranded, especially after dark. Second, the entry rooms are small and inland-facing. Classic, Milkwood and Deluxe Rooms are 33 square metres and mostly face the mountain or the gardens rather than the sea. The Atlantic view that sells the hotel starts several categories up, at roughly double the entry cost, so book the Junior Sea Facing Suite or above if the view is the reason you are coming. Third, winter exposure. Cape Town's low season, roughly May to August, is the wet and windy season on this stretch of coast, and the hotel's best assets are outdoors: the two pools, the terraces, the hammocks, the hiking. They are weather-dependent in exactly the months when rates are lowest.

The Twelve Apostles: frequently asked questions

Is The Twelve Apostles in Camps Bay?

Not exactly. The postal address says Camps Bay, but the hotel stands in Oudekraal on Victoria Road, between Camps Bay and Llandudno, about 10 minutes' drive south of Camps Bay beach. It is alone on the coast road rather than in the beach suburb.

How many rooms does The Twelve Apostles have?

70 rooms and suites, including a Presidential Suite, per the operator. Some third-party pages still list 55 or 66; use 70. Categories run from 33 square metre Classic, Milkwood and Deluxe Rooms up to 70 square metre One Bedroom Sea Facing Suites.

Does The Twelve Apostles have a heated pool?

Yes. There is a heated infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic and a separate rock pool cut into the mountainside with a heated jacuzzi. Both are outdoor and both are served by The Cafe Grill, alongside a tanning deck and ten hammocks in the fynbos gardens.

Does Azure have a Michelin star?

No, and it cannot have one. The Michelin Guide's restaurant selection does not operate anywhere in Africa, so no South African restaurant holds a star. The Twelve Apostles does appear in the Michelin Guide hotel selection, which is a separate distinction for hotels.

Do you need a car at The Twelve Apostles?

Effectively yes. There are no shops, restaurants or pavements nearby and no walkable route to the city, so everything off site means driving. A scheduled hotel shuttle runs to Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront, and helicopter transfers to the Waterfront are offered.
