The Hotel

Halepuna means "house of coral stones" in Hawaiian, a name chosen to position the property within the cultural identity of its parent company rather than merely as an ancillary building. The hotel occupies a 17-storey tower on Helumoa Road in central Waikiki, a three-minute walk from the beach and directly adjacent to the Royal Grove of coconut palms planted by the Hawaiian royal family in the 19th century. The rooftop pool, on the 17th floor, provides an elevated alternative to the beach-level pools that characterise most Waikiki hotels: Diamond Head to the east, the Pacific to the south, the Koolau Mountains to the north.

The 184 rooms were designed with the same restraint that defines the Halekulani aesthetic, the Halepuna is a sister property in the full sense, sharing ownership, management philosophy, and the visual language of its parent. The rooms are smaller and the view inventory is less consistent than the Halekulani's, but the design quality and the materials specification are equivalent. The result is a hotel that delivers the Halekulani standard in a smaller footprint at a price point that, in the context of Waikiki luxury, represents genuine value.

The commercial relationship between the two properties extends to dining: Halepuna guests may dine at La Mer, Orchids, and House Without a Key at the Halekulani on a priority booking basis. This is a meaningful benefit, La Mer holds AAA Five Diamond certification and is typically booked weeks in advance. The Halepuna's in-house restaurant, Halekulani Bakery and Restaurant, operates as an all-day café with baked goods, light meals, and a wine and cocktail programme that draws on the parent company's beverage expertise. The lobby bar programme is managed by the same team that oversees the Halekulani's cocktail service.

The SpaHalekulani wellness programme extends to Halepuna guests, the spa facility is located at the Halekulani, and Halepuna guests book treatments through the same reservation system with equivalent access. The Halekulani's pool and beach amenities, including beach chair service and the orchid pool, are also accessible to Halepuna guests on request through the concierge team. This access structure effectively means that staying at the Halepuna provides most of the Halekulani experience at a materially lower room rate, the primary differentiators being the beachfront location and the pool position.

Best for Solo Retreat

The Halepuna is Waikiki's answer to the solo traveller who wants the Halekulani experience without its beachfront pricing. The rooftop pool is exclusively elevated, a quiet space with Pacific views that attracts a different crowd than the beach-level pools. The Halekulani Bakery serves the kind of morning coffee and pastry situation that a solo traveller can stretch over two hours without feeling the need to explain it. The access to La Mer and Orchids through the cross-property dining arrangement provides the fine dining option. The proximity to the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Royal Grove, and the Iolani Palace grounds, all within walking distance, gives the solo retreat the cultural depth that purely beach-focused properties cannot provide. Why this hotel works in Hawaii

Editorial · #14 on the Top 20 Hotels in Hawaii 2026 list

Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani's case for a Hawaii stay is straightforward: it is the contemporary, design-led sister to the 1907 Halekulani, opened in fall 2019 a block back from the beach, delivering the Halekulani service culture at a lower entry rate than the heritage hotel.

The 288 rooms and suites are quietly contemporary in a restrained, light palette, and the hotel keeps its own pool deck above Beach Walk.

Dining runs to an all-day three-meal restaurant off the lobby and the ground-floor Halekulani Bakery, a Waikiki destination in its own right. The honest compromise is the address: with no beachfront of its own, Halepuna sits a block from the sand, the structural trade against the front-row resorts. Owned within the Halekulani family (Mitsui Fudosan), it is the best pick for guests who want Halekulani restraint without the heritage-wing rate.
