Why Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong for a business trip

Island Shangri-La is the most reliable business base in Admiralty because it sits directly above Pacific Place, plugged into the mall, the MTR and a covered walk toward the convention district, with the scale and service depth a working trip needs. Opened in 1991 inside the 56-floor Two Pacific Place tower, it holds more than 540 rooms and suites, most with Peak or Victoria Harbour views, plus a Horizon Club executive lounge that handles breakfast, evening drinks and informal meetings away from the lobby. The dining is a genuine asset for entertaining clients: the acclaimed Summer Palace serves classic Cantonese, while Pétrus, the Michelin-starred French restaurant near the top of the tower, pairs haute cuisine with a sweeping harbour view. The hotel's signature is the 'Great Motherland of China,' a 16-storey hand-painted Chinese silk mural that climbs the atrium and holds a Guinness record as the largest in the world. The honest caveat for a business traveller is location nuance and age: Admiralty is one MTR stop from Central's banking core rather than inside it, and the classic décor, impeccably kept as it is, feels more traditional than newer Hong Kong rivals. Book a harbour-view category about twelve weeks out, because those and the suites go first.

Best room to request

Request a Speciality Suite for the private terrace, or a Deluxe Harbour View room for the skyline view without the suite premium. The standard Peak View rooms face the hills rather than the water.

Concierge tip

Reserve Summer Palace ahead for client dinners, and book Pétrus near the top of the tower for the harbour view at sunset. The Horizon Club lounge is the quiet spot for an early call or a working breakfast before the day starts.

The wider context

Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Hong Kong for Business list. It scored an aggregate 9.6/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a business trip-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Hong Kong neighbourhood, see Pacific Place / Admiralty and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.

If you have already chosen the dates, our editor recommends booking the room twelve weeks ahead. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. Suites with a private plunge pool or terrace, the very rooms behind this rank, usually vanish first.
