Why Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto for a solo retreat

Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto opened in 2024 on a hillside in the Higashiyama temple district, the brand's first hotel in Japan and one of the newest luxury openings in the city. Kengo Kuma designed it around the idea of yugen, quiet and mysterious beauty, and built it around an authentic Noh stage and a bamboo pavilion rather than the usual lobby bar. There are 52 rooms, each with a cypress soaking tub, and the top Onsen Retreat categories add a private bath fed by the property's natural hot spring. The setting is the real draw for a solo trip: Kiyomizu-dera, Kodaiji and Yasaka Shrine are all within a short walk, so you can be among the temples before the tour groups arrive and back at the spring-fed bath by mid-morning. The honest trade-off is that this is a contemporary design hotel, not an old-Kyoto ryokan, and the hilltop position means a steady climb to the door, so travellers set on tatami-and-futon tradition should look elsewhere on the list.

Best room to request

An Onsen Retreat room for the private hot-spring bath, or an entry Serenity Room if you would rather put the saving toward dining out across Higashiyama.

Concierge tip

Walk up to Kiyomizu-dera for its early opening and you will have the terrace almost to yourself before the crowds build. Back at the hotel, time a soak in the cypress tub for dusk, and ask the concierge what is showing on the Noh stage during your stay.

The wider context

Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Kyoto for a Solo Retreat list. It scored an aggregate 9.7/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a solo retreat-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Kyoto neighbourhood, see Higashiyama (Kodaiji) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.

If the dates are locked in, secure the room around the three-month mark. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
