Arashiyama riverside, the bamboo-grove walking distance solo retreat.
"Arashiyama riverside, the bamboo-grove walking distance solo retreat."
Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, sits on the bank of the Hozu River in Arashiyama, and for a solo traveller its advantage is simple: you can walk to the famous bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji in a few minutes rather than fighting in by bus. The 39 rooms are quiet and timber-lined; many come with a cypress hinoki tub or a private in-room onsen, and the riverside Open-Air Bath Suites have an outdoor bath over the water. Dining stays on site and stays good: Kyo-Suiran plates kaiseki in a restored Meiji-era residence, Kanzan does teppanyaki, and Cafe Hassui serves a riverside afternoon tea. As a Marriott Luxury Collection property it also rewards Bonvoy members, which is rare at this level in Kyoto. The honest catch is that Arashiyama sits about half an hour from central Kyoto, so a solo guest who wants Gion's restaurants and nightlife on the doorstep will be commuting. Best for the traveller who wants the grove at dawn and an onsen at dusk.
An Open-Air Bath Suite for the private onsen over the river, or a river-view room with a hinoki tub as the entry.
Walk into the bamboo grove by about 6.30am, when it is empty before the tour traffic. Visit the Tenryu-ji zen garden around 8am on the way back, then keep the evening for the in-room onsen and the river view.
Suiran, A Luxury Collection Hotel sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Kyoto for a Solo Retreat list. It scored an aggregate 9.6/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a solo retreat-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Kyoto neighbourhood, see Arashiyama (Hozu River) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
Have firm dates? Our editor's advice is to book roughly twelve weeks in advance. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. It is the terrace and plunge-pool suites, the rooms this rank rests on, that book up soonest.
