Banyan Tree's Garrya brand, Nijo Castle-adjacent, the modern-ryokan solo option.
"Banyan Tree's Garrya brand, Nijo Castle-adjacent, the modern-ryokan solo option."
Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto opened in 2022 as the Banyan Tree group's Garrya-brand property in Kyoto, a contemporary take on the ryokan. It is small, 25 rooms including a suite, with tatami-floored rooms, cypress (hinoki) soaking baths, and in-room kaiseki served in a clean, modern register. It sits a short walk from Nijo Castle, on the quieter west side of the centre. The appeal is the contemporary-ryokan format: the calm and the bath of a traditional inn with the service and design of a modern hotel. The honest trade-off is scale and setting, at 25 rooms there is little resort infrastructure, and the Nijo Castle quarter is residential rather than central to Gion or the Higashiyama temples. Best for the solo traveller who wants a quiet, design-led ryokan alternative within walking distance of one of Kyoto's great sights.
The Garden View Suite for the most space and a garden outlook, or a Premier room for the entry-level contemporary-ryokan stay.
Walk to Nijo Castle for the 8.30am opening, before the gates get busy. Pre-book the in-room kaiseki for one evening; it is the culinary highlight of a stay here.
Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Kyoto for a Solo Retreat list. It scored an aggregate 9.6/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a solo retreat-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. Once your dates are fixed, aim to reserve the room about three months out. Rooms with the coveted orientation are claimed first, while popular-month availability runs out months in advance. Suite-level rooms with private plunge pools or terraces, the ones that earn this rank, are typically the first to sell out.
