1500s castle estate, 50 rooms, set in 30 hectares of parkland, the castle-estate alternative.
Castello di Casiglio is a genuine medieval castle, with parts dating to the 1100s, turned into a 46-room hotel set in private wooded parkland near Erba. For a fairy-tale proposal it delivers the storybook backdrop at a fraction of lakefront prices, with one honest catch: it is inland, around 20 to 30 minutes from the lake itself, not on the water.
Castello di Casiglio is a real castle: its oldest sections date to the 1100s, and much of what stands today took shape in the early 1500s, when it belonged to Cardinal Beltramino. It sits above the town of Erba, between Lake Como and Milan, in a wooded private park with formal Italian gardens. The 46 rooms are split between the castle keep and the adjoining 19th-century Villa Elena, with the most atmospheric rooms in the old castle itself, complete with stone walls and high ceilings. There is a restaurant on site, a pool, a spa and a chapel, which makes it a popular wedding and proposal venue, and the grounds give you the privacy and the storybook photographs the setting promises. The honest caveat for a Lake Como proposal is location: Castello di Casiglio is inland near Erba, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car from the lake shore at Como, so you get the castle and the parkland, but not lake views from your window. Choose it if the fairy-tale castle is the point and you are happy to drive to the water.
Request a room inside the original castle keep rather than the Villa Elena annex; the castle rooms have the stone walls, beamed ceilings and tower views that make the stay.
Walk the parkland and the castle courtyard at dusk for the proposal photographs; the grounds are the property's strongest setting. Keep a car or a transfer on hand, since the lakefront at Como is about a 30-minute drive and there is little within walking distance.
Castello di Casiglio sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Lake Como for a Proposal list. It scored an aggregate 8.8/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on a proposal-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Lake Como neighbourhood, see Erba (south of lake) and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
If your dates are fixed, book around the three-month mark. The castle-keep rooms are the most requested and the smallest in number, and weekends in the wedding season are claimed months ahead.
