Castello di Casiglio is a real castle: its oldest sections date to the 1100s, and much of what stands today took shape in the early 1500s, when it belonged to Cardinal Beltramino. It sits above the town of Erba, between Lake Como and Milan, in a wooded private park with formal Italian gardens. The 46 rooms are split between the castle keep and the adjoining 19th-century Villa Elena, with the most atmospheric rooms in the old castle itself, complete with stone walls and high ceilings.
