Palace Hotel Como is the grand, city-side base for a Lake Como proposal, set right on the lakefront promenade in the centre of Como town. The Belle Epoque building opened in 1898 as the Grand Hotel Plinius and took the Palace Hotel name in 1992; today it has 94 rooms, many with lake-view balconies, and its lakefront restaurant, Antica Darsena, looks straight out over the water. For a proposal it trades the seclusion of the smaller villages for the energy and convenience of the town: the cathedral, the shops and the cafes are a short walk, and the ferry pier next door makes day trips to Bellagio and Villa del Balbianello easy. It is one of the more affordable historic addresses on the lake. The honest trade-off is that this is a busy town-centre hotel rather than a quiet retreat, so it suits couples who want to be in the middle of Como rather than tucked away on a private shore.
