The site began as the Hyde Park Corner Underground station of 1906, with Leslie Green's ox-blood faience facade, and later housed the Pizza on the Park jazz and cabaret venue before its conversion to a hotel. The Wellesley Cigar Lounge is the property's signature, one of the few London hotel cigar lounges still operating with a Cuban-cigar humidor and dedicated ventilation. It suits the London business trip built around private-office or private-banking clients who prefer a smaller operating culture, with Park Lane a block north and Sloane Street a block south. The honest trade-off is scale: at thirty-six rooms there is no large spa or pool, and the public rooms are intimate rather than grand.
