"Barefoot luxury was invented here. Treehouse villas, observatory dining, a slide from your bedroom to the lagoon."
Soneva Fushi is the resort that wrote the Maldives honeymoon playbook every other resort now follows. Sonu and Eva Shivdasani opened the property in 1995 on Kunfunadhoo Island in Baa Atoll with a radical premise — barefoot luxury, no shoes from arrival, no televisions, no clocks — and the operating model has been imitated across the archipelago and the rest of the tropical world for nearly thirty years. The villas are the largest in the Maldives by some margin: the Crusoe Villas are 411 square metres, the Family Villas larger, and the new Treehouse villas (the four-bedroom ones suspended in the canopy) are honeymoon assets that no other Maldives resort can match. Cinema Paradiso — the open-air movie screen on the beach — projects new releases over the lagoon five nights a week. The Observatory has a 16-inch telescope and a resident astronomer. Out of the Blue is the over-water dining cluster with six restaurants; Fresh in the Garden is the over-water restaurant accessed by zip-line. Soneva is the highest-priced resort on this list and consistently the most-decorated. For the honeymoon where the architecture and the activity programme matter as much as the villa, it is the answer.
Treehouse Villa Suite or Crusoe Villa with Pool — both have private pools, both face directly into the sunset.
Book the dolphin-cruise sunset on day three (the longer, six-pm cruise — not the standard four-pm). Pre-arrange a private dinner at Fresh in the Garden — accessed by zip-line, eight metres above the canopy. Cinema Paradiso plays a new-release film at 9pm; Soneva will hold two beach loungers if requested.
Soneva Fushi sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in the Maldives for a Honeymoon list. It scored an aggregate 9.8/10 across the three editorial criteria — competitive against the field but, on a honeymoon-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Maldives neighbourhood, see Baa Atoll and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
If you have already chosen the dates, our editor recommends booking the room twelve weeks ahead. The best suites with the right view orientation go first, and inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks. Suite-level rooms with private plunge pools or terraces — the ones that earn this rank — are typically the first to sell out.
