Soneva Jani opened in 2016 as the Soneva group's second Maldives resort and it became the architectural benchmark for what an overwater villa could be. Each villa has a retractable bedroom roof — at the press of a button the roof slides back to expose the bed to the night sky. Each villa has a water slide from the master suite directly into the lagoon below. Each villa has a private hammock submerged at low tide. The villas range from 411 square metres (the smallest) to over 1,200 square metres (the four-bedroom Reserve). The lagoon at Soneva Jani is one of the largest in the Maldives — 5.6 kilometres of crystal water with five islands inside its edge — and the villas are spread out enough that you cannot see another villa from your deck. By the Light of the Moon is the sky-deck observatory. So Hands is the over-water Thai restaurant. Soneva In Aqua is the world's first Maldivian boat-based dining experience. If Soneva Fushi is the original, Soneva Jani is the architecturally perfected version. Both are correct picks; couples often book Fushi first and graduate to Jani for the second Maldives trip.
