Why Outrigger Ka'anapali Beach Resort for a family holiday

Outrigger Ka'anapali Beach Resort, rebranded from the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel after Outrigger took it over in 2023, is the value-tier family choice on Ka'anapali: 432 rooms in low-rise buildings on the beach at the north end, near Black Rock. Its real distinction is cultural depth. For more than a decade it has been called Hawaii's most Hawaiian hotel, and it runs free daily programmes in lei-making, hula, ukulele, and the Hawaiian language, plus an Aloha Friends Club for children and an on-site luau. You get the same Ka'anapali Beach as the Hyatt Regency or Westin Maui for noticeably less. The honest trade-off is the rooms: this is an older, simpler property, and the accommodations are plain rather than luxurious. For a family that cares more about the beach, the culture, and the bill than about thread count, that is exactly the point.

Best room to request

Two-Bedroom Suite for a family of four, or an Ocean View room for the beach at the lowest price.

Concierge tip

Sign the family up for hula, lei-making, and ukulele on day one; the daily cultural programme is free and the best thing here. Book the Tuesday or Thursday luau ahead.

The wider context

Outrigger Ka'anapali Beach Resort sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Maui for a Family Holiday list. It scored an aggregate 9.4/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field, but on family-specific factors the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Maui neighbourhood, see Ka'anapali, west coast and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.

Once your dates are fixed, aim to reserve the room about three months out. Expect the best-positioned suites to go early; in the busy season the lead time is months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
