Why Eden Rock - St Barths for a honeymoon

Eden Rock - St Barths is the island's original icon, which is exactly why it tops honeymoon lists: it occupies the granite outcrop in the middle of St Jean Bay, the most photographed position on St Barths. Remy de Haenen built the first hotel on the island here in 1953; the Matthews family bought it in 1995, and the Oetker Collection has been a partner since 2014. After Hurricane Irma, a multi-year rebuild reopened the hotel in 2019 with 37 rooms and suites spread across the rock, the beachfront and the hillside villas, a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant and a new spa. For a honeymoon the draw is the setting and the history: the rock-top suites look straight down the bay, the Sand Bar puts lunch and dinner on the beach, and the Eden Rock-on-the-Rocks bar owns the sunset. The honest trade-off is the price, this is one of the Caribbean's most expensive hotels and the bay fills with day boats in high season. It suits couples who want the icon and the scene rather than seclusion.

Best room to request

One of the rock-top suites for the view straight down the bay, or a beachfront room for direct access to the sand.

Concierge tip

Book a sunset drink at Eden Rock-on-the-Rocks for your first evening, and reserve a beachside table at the Sand Bar for dinner. Ask about a day on the water; the hotel can arrange a boat to the surrounding bays.

The wider context

Eden Rock - St Barths sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in St Barths for a Honeymoon list. It scored an aggregate 9.9/10 across our three editorial criteria, the top of the field, and on honeymoon-specific factors the setting above is what earned its rank. For alternatives nearby, St Jean Bay has several options; for a different island entirely, see the related lists below.

Have firm dates? Our editor's advice is to book roughly twelve weeks in advance. The view-facing suites disappear earliest, and high-season inventory moves on a timescale of months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
