A great beach resort fails or succeeds on three things: the beach itself, the service consistency, and the food. The twelve below get all three right.
The twelve
1. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai — Hawaii, USA
The strongest single beach resort in the United States. Bungalow-style accommodation across a 50-acre property. Seven swimming pools. The King's Pond is a natural lagoon stocked with reef fish.
2. Belmond Cap Juluca — Anguilla, Caribbean
Maundays Bay. The Moorish architecture and the long beach (one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean) combine into a serious resort. Recently renovated by Belmond.
3. One&Only Reethi Rah — Maldives, Indian Ocean
One of the largest single islands in the Maldives, with twelve beaches. Bicycles to every villa. The villas are among the most spacious in the country.
4. Soneva Fushi — Maldives, Indian Ocean
The original luxury Maldivian resort. Forested island, barefoot-luxury aesthetic, underground wine cellar. The food programme (Fresh in the Garden) is exceptional.
5. Anantara Kihavah — Maldives, Indian Ocean
Baa Atoll. The underwater restaurant SEA is the most-photographed dining room in the country. The reef is one of the strongest in the central Maldives.
6. Le Sirenuse Conca dei Marini — Italy, Mediterranean
The new sister property to Le Sirenuse Positano, opened 2024. Beachfront on the Amalfi Coast. The most-contemporary luxury hotel on the coast.
7. Belmond Hotel Caruso — Italy, Mediterranean
Ravello, 350 metres above the sea. The infinity pool overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea below — one of the most-photographed pools in Europe.
8. Borgo Egnazia — Italy, Mediterranean
Puglia. White-village architecture inspired by the surrounding region. Strong family-friendly programme.
9. Costa Navarino — Greece, Mediterranean
Peloponnese. Several properties (Romanos, Westin, Mandarin Oriental) within a single resort. The strongest family-friendly Greek resort.
10. Likuliku Lagoon Resort — Fiji, South Pacific
The first Fijian overwater bungalow resort. Adults-only. Smaller and more intimate than the Bora Bora alternatives.
11. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora — French Polynesia
Overwater bungalows with Mt Otemanu views. The French Polynesian Maldives equivalent.
12. Aman Pulo — Philippines, South Pacific
Private island in the Cuyo Archipelago. Forty-two casitas. The most-remote Aman beach property.
The criteria for evaluating a beach resort
Six specific things to evaluate:
The beach itself
- Width: a 50+ metre wide beach is meaningfully different from a 15-metre strip
- Length: a long beach allows real walking
- Composition: white sand is best; coarse sand is a meaningful negative
- Access: direct from the resort or via a path
- Privacy: shared with the public or resort-only
The water
- Clarity: turquoise visibility is the standard
- Calm: lagoon-protected vs. open ocean
- Reef: snorkelling-quality reefs are a major positive
- Currents: dangerous currents are a real negative
The service consistency
- Beach service: drinks, food, towel service
- Pool service: same as beach
- In-villa service: housekeeping, butler if applicable
The food
- Multiple restaurants on property
- Quality across all restaurants, not just the headline
- In-villa dining options
- Breakfast quality (the meal you will eat most often)
The villa or room
- Direct beach access from the room
- Private outdoor space (deck, garden)
- View
- Size
The location
- Isolation vs. nearby exploration options
- Transfer time from airport
- Weather reliability for the time of year
How to choose between regions
A simple framework:
- For US travellers wanting short flights: Hawaii (Hualalai), Caribbean (Cap Juluca, Le Toiny)
- For European travellers wanting Mediterranean: Le Sirenuse, Costa Navarino, Borgo Egnazia
- For travellers willing to fly long: Maldives, French Polynesia, Fiji, Philippines
- For families: Costa Navarino, Borgo Egnazia, Hualalai
- For honeymooners: Maldives, Bora Bora, Le Sirenuse Conca dei Marini
- For solo travellers: Aman Pulo, Likuliku
What to ask before booking a beach resort
Three questions to ask the property:
- Is the standard beach view villa actually beach view, or just "ocean view"? Many resorts use these interchangeably; the distinction matters.
- What is the seaweed and sargassum status of the beach this year? Climate change has increased these issues; ask explicitly.
- What is the standard transfer time from the airport, including any boat or seaplane components?
Hotels that answer specifically and quickly are hotels that take their beach offering seriously.
The beach quality problem
A specific issue most beach hotel marketing obscures: not all beaches are equal.
Specific factors that determine beach quality:
Sand composition
White silica sand: ideal. Sand stays cool, looks photogenic, is comfortable to walk on. White coral sand: good. Slightly coarser; can be hot in midday sun. Tan / golden sand: variable. Some beaches are excellent (Italian Riviera); others are mediocre. Volcanic black sand: distinctive. Hot in midday; not photogenic. Brown / muddy sand: avoid.
Slope
Gentle slope: ideal for swimming. Walking far before depth. Steep slope: less ideal for non-swimmers. Drops quickly. No slope: lagoon. Can be very calm but not appropriate for swimming.
Surf
Calm: best for couples and family. Maldives, Caribbean lagoons. Moderate: good for swimming, ideal for relaxation. Italian Riviera, parts of Hawaii. Heavy surf: best for surfing; not for casual swimmers. Bali Uluwatu, parts of Maui.
The marketing photos rarely distinguish these. Read recent reviews specifically about the beach.
The seaweed and sargassum problem
A specific 2024-2026 issue: seaweed and sargassum bloom events have affected Caribbean and Mexican beaches significantly.
Particularly affected: Yucatán Peninsula (Tulum, Riviera Maya), Barbados, Antigua, parts of Florida.
Less affected: Anguilla, St Barths, Turks and Caicos, the Pacific.
The hotels are working on this — daily beach cleaning, on-property algae barriers, alternative beach access points. Verify with the hotel directly before booking peak season.
Five rules for beach quality verification
- Read the most recent 20 reviews specifically searching "beach", "sand", "water"
- Check Instagram tags for the specific resort to see actual user-generated photos (not marketing photos)
- Ask the resort about seaweed status for the time of year
- Verify the beach is private (resort-only) or public
- Confirm the beach is walkable from your room (not a 10-minute walk via shuttle)
Five rules for beach resort selection
- Verify the beach quality independently — the marketing photos are deceptive
- Book directly with the resort or through a luxury travel agent for the strongest amenities
- Pay for the upgraded villa category — beach resorts are where this matters most
- Avoid all-inclusive packages at genuine luxury beach resorts; the food is rarely good enough
- The shoulder season at most beach destinations is materially better value
