Behind-the-bar mixology experiences at top hotel bars are the new luxury reservation. The bartender takes over for an hour. You're behind the bar.

What it is

A private session — typically 60-90 minutes — with the head bartender at a hotel bar. You learn 3-5 signature cocktails, you make them yourself, you drink the result. Often includes a tour of the spirits cabinet and a demonstration of clarification or fat-washing techniques.

The hotels

Connaught Bar London

The Connaught mixology programme — 90 minute private session, includes signature Connaught Negroni technique.

Bemelmans Bar — Carlyle NYC

Behind-the-bar with senior bartenders. Classic cocktail focus.

Aman Tokyo Bar

Japanese mixology with sake, shochu, and Japanese whisky integrations.

MO Bar Singapore

Asian-influenced cocktail design. Pandan, lemongrass, jasmine.

Bulgari Bar Roma

Italian aperitivo and amaro programme. Bartender-led tasting.

Hotel Plaza Athénée Paris — Bar Anglais

Champagne-focused mixology. French aperitif tradition.

Cost and booking

$300-$800 per person, depending on hotel. Booking 30-60 days out. Group sizes 2-6 typical. Some hotels offer it as part of suite packages.

What you walk away with

  • 3-5 cocktail recipes you can replicate at home
  • A signed apron or shirt from the bar
  • A bottle of the house signature spirit (sometimes)
  • Photos with the bartender

Five rules

  1. Book ahead — these slots are limited
  2. Eat first — you'll taste 5+ cocktails
  3. Ask questions — bartenders love it
  4. Tip the bartender separately — generous
  5. Stay overnight — the cocktails matter
