How to use this framework

Three rules:

Rule 1: optimise for weather first

The destination's weather makes or breaks the trip. Choose the month before the destination if weather flexibility matters.

Rule 2: shoulder season is the underrated value

Shoulder season (the 4-6 weeks between peak and off-peak) typically delivers 80% of peak conditions at 60-70% of peak rates.

Rule 3: avoid mass-tourism peaks

Christmas-New Year, August in the Mediterranean, Chinese New Year in Asian destinations all produce poor experiences regardless of weather.

Five rules for destination timing

  1. Choose the month before the destination if you can be flexible
  2. Shoulder seasons are the underrated value windows
  3. Verify weather patterns specific to the year you're traveling
  4. Avoid mass-tourism peaks unless you specifically want them
  5. Build in 2-3 day weather buffer for outdoor-dependent activities
