The Instagram-worthy hotel room is its own category. The features are knowable — the question is which hotels offer them, and which specific room number to request.
The features

A freestanding tub with a view becomes the trip's signature shot. Aman Tokyo (suite tubs with city view), Cheval Blanc Maldives (over-water tub), Belmond Caruso Ravello (terrace tub).
Balcony with composition
A balcony framing a specific view. Le Sirenuse Positano (every balcony), Capri Palace (rooftop suites), Aman Venice (palazzo terraces).

Specific suite famously photographed. Request explicitly.
Aman Tokyo — corner suites
The corner suites have wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows.
Belmond Caruso Ravello — Belvedere suite
Terrace pool with the panorama.
Soneva Jani — Crusoe Residence
Overwater pool villa, signature shot from the deck.
Cheval Blanc St-Barth — Beach Bungalow
Beach access, signature outdoor tub.
How to request specific rooms
Direct booking with hotel rather than third party. Mention the trip's purpose ("anniversary," "special occasion"). Request specific room number or specific feature ("east-facing balcony").
The hotels that handle this well will work with you. Some will not — they cycle inventory based on stay length, not request.
Five rules
- Direct booking only — third parties lose room requests
- Mention the occasion at booking
- Request specific room numbers when known
- Sunset side over sunrise side for most photography
- Suite over standard room — the photography is built in
