The four-step strategy
Step 1: accumulate via credit card sign-up bonuses
The largest single source of points. Major cards offer 60,000-150,000 point bonuses.
Step 2: transfer to hotel partners strategically
Chase Sapphire transfers to Hyatt at 1:1. AmEx transfers to Hilton at 1:2 (typically poor ratio).
Step 3: redeem at peak hotels in peak seasons
The points-per-dollar value is dramatically higher at upper-tier hotels in peak season.
Step 4: stack with credit card free night certificates
Many hotel cards include annual free night certificates. Use them.
The strongest combinations
Three combinations that work:
Combination 1: Chase Sapphire + Hyatt
Chase Sapphire Preferred + World of Hyatt cards. Points transfer 1:1 at strong value.
Combination 2: Hilton Aspire stand-alone
Hilton Aspire generates Hilton points, includes Diamond status, includes annual free night certificate.
Combination 3: AmEx Platinum + Marriott Bonvoy
AmEx Platinum + Marriott Brilliant. Points transfer at 1:1.5 (mediocre ratio).
Five rules
- Sign-up bonuses are the largest source of points
- Chase Sapphire + Hyatt is the strongest combination
- Transfer ratios matter, verify before transferring
- Redeem at peak hotels in peak seasons
- Annual free night certificates are the highest-value benefit per fee dollar

How do you book free hotel stays with points?
Three primary channels. First, hotel loyalty programs (Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, IHG One Rewards), earn points through stays and credit-card spending, redeem directly through the program for award nights. Second, credit-card transfer partners (Amex Membership Rewards → Hilton/Marriott; Chase Ultimate Rewards → Hyatt/IHG; Capital One → most programs), earn flexible points and transfer them when redemption value is highest. Third, hotel co-branded credit cards with annual free-night certificates, many cards include a yearly cert sometimes worth $400, $1,200+ per night.
What is the best loyalty program for redeeming free nights?
World of Hyatt for redemption value, fixed award charts with no devaluation since 2021, capped at 35,000, 45,000 points for Park Hyatt and Andaz category properties, generating 2.0, 2.5 cents per point on Park Hyatt Tokyo and Andaz Mayakoba redemptions. Marriott Bonvoy has the broadest property availability but uses dynamic pricing, best value is at off-peak dates at top properties. Hilton Honors free-night certificates from co-branded cards have no category cap, making them the most flexible high-end redemption.
How many points do you need for a free hotel night?
Hyatt: 5,000, 45,000 points per night depending on category. Marriott Bonvoy: 17,500, 120,000+ depending on property and dynamic pricing. Hilton Honors: 10,000, 150,000 depending on property and demand. IHG: 10,000, 120,000 for most properties; Six Senses and Regent run higher. The 'normal' value benchmark: 1.0 cents per point baseline, 1.5, 2.0 cents per point for above-average redemptions, 2.5+ cents per point for elite top-tier redemptions.
Is it better to redeem points for award nights or take cash discounts?
Calculate cents-per-point. Divide the cash room rate (net of taxes and fees) by the points required for the award night. If the result is above 1.5 cents per point, points are the better value at most programs. Below 1.0 cents per point, save the points and pay cash. The math changes for elite members, earning bonus points and elite-night credit on a paid stay can shift the value calculation 0.2, 0.5 cents per point.
Which credit cards earn the most hotel points?
Amex Marriott Brilliant for Marriott (6x at Marriott properties + status), Amex Hilton Aspire for Hilton (14x at Hilton + Diamond status), Chase Sapphire Reserve for flexible transfer to Hyatt (3x on travel + transfer ratio 1:1), Capital One Venture X for flexible transfer to most hotel programs. The right card depends on which hotel program your typical travel naturally favors; chasing maximum welcome bonuses without portfolio fit usually dilutes value.
