Free hotel stays via points and miles require strategic accumulation and redemption. The framework below covers the working strategy.

The four-step strategy

Step 1: accumulate via credit card sign-up bonuses

The largest single source of points. Major cards offer 60,000-150,000 point bonuses.

Step 2: transfer to hotel partners strategically

Chase Sapphire transfers to Hyatt at 1:1. AmEx transfers to Hilton at 1:2 (typically poor ratio).

Step 3: redeem at peak hotels in peak seasons

The points-per-dollar value is dramatically higher at upper-tier hotels in peak season.

Step 4: stack with credit card free night certificates

Many hotel cards include annual free night certificates. Use them.

The strongest combinations

Three working combinations:

Combination 1: Chase Sapphire + Hyatt

Chase Sapphire Preferred + World of Hyatt cards. Points transfer 1:1 at strong value.

Combination 2: Hilton Aspire stand-alone

Hilton Aspire generates Hilton points, includes Diamond status, includes annual free night certificate.

Combination 3: AmEx Platinum + Marriott Bonvoy

AmEx Platinum + Marriott Brilliant. Points transfer at 1:1.5 (mediocre ratio).

Five rules

  1. Sign-up bonuses are the largest source of points
  2. Chase Sapphire + Hyatt is the strongest combination
  3. Transfer ratios matter — verify before transferring
  4. Redeem at peak hotels in peak seasons
  5. Annual free night certificates are the highest-value benefit per fee dollar
