The Hotel

The Hotel Jerome opened in 1889 at the peak of Aspen's silver mining boom — built by Jerome Wheeler, the Macy's department store heir who also built the Wheeler Opera House across the street — and has been the social centre of Aspen life for 135 years. The Auberge Resorts Collection took management in 2012 and restored the Victorian exterior, the lobby's original pressed tin ceiling, and the J-Bar to their 1889 appearance while introducing the service infrastructure of a contemporary luxury hotel.

The 94 rooms are the most historically furnished in Aspen: Victorian detailing, four-poster beds, and the antique fixtures that the Wheeler era demanded. The upper-floor corner suites overlook Main Street and the Aspen Mountain peak above — the most architecturally satisfying hotel rooms in the Roaring Fork Valley. The outdoor heated pool, carved into the Victorian building's garden, is the most atmospheric pool at any Colorado hotel.

The J-Bar, the Jerome's street-level saloon, is where Aspen's actual social life occurs — the bar that Hunter Thompson frequented, where every celebrity who passes through Aspen eventually appears, and where the gap between the town's wealth and its western character is most visible. The apres-ski tradition at the J-Bar is the most authentic in Aspen.

Best for Anniversary

The Hotel Jerome anniversary is built around the J-Bar and the building — the 1889 Victorian architecture, the Hunter Thompson association, and the Aspen Mountain view from the upper-floor suites produce an anniversary that is grounded in the town's actual history. The Auberge's anniversary programme execution at Jerome is more intimate than at the Little Nell's resort scale. See all anniversary hotels →

Best for Solo Retreat

The Hotel Jerome is Aspen's finest solo hotel because the J-Bar — where solo drinking is never solitary — and the building's historical weight create a solo stay with genuine cultural content. A solo week at the Jerome during the Aspen Music Festival, or during September's golden aspen foliage, is one of the finest solo hotel experiences in the mountain West. See all solo retreat hotels →
