The Hotel

The Liberty Boston opened in 2007 in the former Charles Street Jail — an 1851 granite fortress designed by Gridley Bryant that housed prisoners, including suffragists and civil rights leaders, until 1990. The conversion, by Architectural Team Inc., preserved the octagonal rotunda, the cellblock tiers, and the original granite walls while introducing the amenity infrastructure of a contemporary hotel. The CLINK restaurant occupies the former jail cellblock, with dining tables positioned in the original cells.

The 298 rooms are distributed across the jail's original cellblock wings and a 2007 glass addition that rises above the historic structure. The Liberty Wing rooms — in the original building — have the architecture: barrel-vaulted ceilings, original stone walls, and windows that were designed to let light in rather than views out. The glass tower rooms are more conventional but have the better views of the Charles River and the Esplanade.

The Charles Street location places the Liberty between Beacon Hill (a five-minute walk up the hill) and the Massachusetts General Hospital complex (immediately adjacent). The Esplanade running path along the Charles River begins at the hotel's eastern entrance. The hotel's history attracts guests who are interested in something other than thread counts, and serves them with the service quality that history alone cannot provide.

Best for Solo Retreat

The Liberty's combination of historical narrative, the CLINK restaurant's dramatic setting, and the Esplanade running path makes it the most intellectually interesting solo hotel in Boston. A solo stay that includes a walk through Beacon Hill, an afternoon at the MFA, and a CLINK dinner in the original cellblock is the most distinctly Boston solo itinerary available. Best for Anniversary

An anniversary at the Liberty Boston is for couples who find a converted 1851 jailhouse romantic — and those couples are not wrong. The CLINK restaurant's private dining options in the cellblock, the original stone architecture, and the Charles River Esplanade morning walk constitute an anniversary experience that no other Boston hotel can replicate.
