The Hotel

The Wentworth Mansion opened in 1998 in an 1886 Gilded Age High Victorian estate on Wentworth Street — a 14,000-square-foot mansion built for cotton merchant Francis Silas Rodgers that represents the apex of Charleston's late 19th-century prosperity. The building's exterior — Romanesque Revival with Flemish and Jacobean elements — is the most architecturally extravagant private building in South Carolina, and the interior maintains the original's stained glass windows, carved mahogany woodwork, and the Tiffany fixtures that Rodgers commissioned.

The 21 rooms are the largest in Charleston — most begin at 600 square feet — and are furnished with antiques appropriate to the mansion's 1886 character. The rooftop cupola, accessible to all guests, provides a 360-degree view of Charleston's roofscape that is the finest urban panorama available to hotel guests in the city. Circa 1886 restaurant serves a low-country menu in the mansion's original carriage house.

The mansion's Harleston Village location — south of Broad Street, the city's most exclusive residential neighbourhood — is the quietest of any Charleston hotel and the most historically rooted.
