Hemingway had the right idea. The sunsets genuinely are as good as the legends claim, and the best hotels understand that the island's particular magic comes from what it refuses to take seriously. Choose a hotel with a real pool, a real bar, and access to Duval Street when you want it and distance from it when you don't.

Key West is one of America's most individual honeymoon destinations — small enough to walk across, warm enough year-round, and distinctive enough that the experience is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the continental US.
For couples who want the most complete experience, Ocean Key Resort sits at the best address on the island: the end of Duval Street and the beginning of the Gulf, with a Sunset Pier that provides the Key West sunset in its most theatrical form. Every accommodation is a suite. For the couple who wants the island's historic character more than its waterfront views, The Marquesa Hotel is 27 rooms in a Victorian restoration in Old Town, with Café Marquesa providing the finest dining on the island steps from the room. For a private beach and a sense of the historic resort tradition, Casa Marina is Key West's only beachfront resort of scale — built by Flagler and still the island's most composed luxury address.
Key West has been one of America's great party destinations since before the phrase existed. Duval Street, the sunset celebrations at Mallory Square, and the island's fundamental tolerance for extravagance make it the right choice for a group trip that wants energy rather than restraint.
The Marker provides the most complete group infrastructure: three pools, 96 rooms large enough for a party of any composition, and a harbor-side position that makes the transition from pool to Duval Street logistically painless. Casa Marina's private beach is the best day-before-the-night option — the pool scene runs with a particular energy that suits the occasion. For those who want to be inside the Old Town action rather than adjacent to it, Nyah Key West puts 24 adults-only rooms a short walk from everything Duval Street offers, with a pool and complimentary evening cocktails to start the night correctly.

Key West sits at 24 degrees north latitude — effectively in the subtropics — and its climate reflects that position year-round. Winters are warm and dry (70–80°F), with January and February producing the island's best weather: low humidity, consistent sunshine, and nights cool enough for sleeping without air conditioning. March through May is the shoulder season before summer humidity sets in. Summer (June–September) is hot, humid, and hurricane-adjacent — but hotel rates drop 30–50% and the island belongs to locals and committed travellers who know what they're getting. October and November are ideal: hurricane season winding down, lower rates, and the Fantasy Fest celebration in October that turns the island into something that requires either full participation or deliberate avoidance.
Old Town is the historic core — Duval Street, Mallory Square, Hemingway's house, the architecture of conch cottages and Victorian mansions, and every bar of consequence. The Marquesa, Gardens Hotel, Nyah, La Te Da, and Pier House all operate in or immediately adjacent to Old Town. This is where Key West happens; staying here is staying in the island, not at it.
Casa Marina and South Beach sit along the island's southern shore — quieter, residential, with the Atlantic rather than the Gulf as the backdrop. Casa Marina, Reach Key West, and the Southernmost House operate here. This is where the island's beach resorts concentrate; the Atlantic side has calmer, cleaner water than the Gulf side and the only stretch of natural sand on an otherwise rocky shoreline.
New Town is the less-visited eastern end of the island — more practical, less atmospheric, with Parrot Key Hotel providing the best family infrastructure in a location that accepts children's energy without apology.
Key West is not a cheap island. Casa Marina and Ocean Key run $300–$700 in season. The Marquesa holds $299–$500. The boutique Old Town options run $189–$399. Resort fees apply at several properties ($25–$50/night) and should be factored in when comparing rates. Florida's 13% accommodation tax applies across the board.
Fantasy Fest (October), New Year's Eve, and Memorial Day weekend are the three dates requiring 6-month advance booking. January and February high season books out 3–4 months ahead for the better properties. The island has limited hotel inventory — the smaller boutique hotels fill fastest at peak periods. Key West International Airport (EYW) accepts direct flights from major US hubs seasonally; Miami (1 hour by car via the Overseas Highway) is the reliable backup connection point.
