The Hotel

Rosewood London occupies the former Pearl Assurance headquarters at 252 High Holborn, a Grade II listed Edwardian building completed in 1914 whose courtyard, colonnaded facade, and domed atrium were designed for a company that expected to last forever. The hotel has adapted this infrastructure — the courtyard, the rotunda, the deep-set arched windows — with an intelligence that makes the building feel inhabited rather than preserved. It sits at the geographic centre of London: Covent Garden five minutes west, the City five minutes east, Bloomsbury directly north.

The 306 rooms and suites are arranged around the internal courtyard and along the Holborn frontage. The design language takes its cue from the English country house — deep colours, bookshelves, writing desks of a functional weight — while applying the material standards of a contemporary luxury hotel. The Manor Wing suites are the largest and most architecturally elaborate; the Holborn rooms on the upper floors are some of the best-value luxury rooms in London, offering full five-star service at a price point meaningfully below Mayfair. The hotel's pet policy — dogs are welcome, full stop, no size restrictions — is indicative of an attitude to hospitality that does not optimise for minimising inconvenience.

Holborn Dining Room, the hotel's main restaurant, is the brasserie that Covent Garden deserves: the rotisserie and grill, the long marble bar, the bespoke pie menu (available to take away) that has become a minor institution. Scarfes Bar, named after Gerald Scarfe and hung with his original drawings, is the best late-night drawing room in this part of London — a fire, deep sofas, and a cocktail programme that takes its references from literature and asks nothing more of its guests than that they arrive and remain. The Mirror Room operates as a more restrained alternative for afternoon tea and cocktails.

The Sense Spa at Rosewood London is not the largest or most technically ambitious spa in the city, but it functions at a level of consistent excellence — a swimming pool, treatment rooms, a well-equipped gym — that makes it genuinely useful rather than merely decorative. The courtyard garden, open in warmer months, provides one of the few genuinely sheltered outdoor spaces available in a London luxury hotel.

Best for Business

The Holborn location is underrated for business. The City is a short cab ride east. The West End client offices are a short cab ride west. The hotel's meeting rooms are small enough to be useful for the kind of two- or three-person meetings that constitute most actual business activity, and large enough for presentations. Holborn Dining Room handles client lunches with aplomb; Scarfes Bar handles the evening drink that turns a transaction into a relationship. The rooms are quiet and the WiFi is fast.

Best for Solo Retreat

Rosewood London provides the infrastructure of a solo stay without the loneliness that some London luxury hotels inadvertently enforce. Scarfes Bar is the right size and temperature for a person alone with a book and a good drink. The courtyard is manageable. The Holborn Dining Room has a long bar. The neighbourhood — Covent Garden, the Courtauld, Lincoln's Inn Fields immediately adjacent — is the most walkable stretch of central London. For a solo trip built around reading, eating, and moving through the city at one's own pace, the Rosewood is the hotel that understands the assignment.
