London's most theatrical hotel, in the most literal sense. The Thames-facing suites have ended careers and started relationships since 1889.

The Hotel

The Savoy opened on 6 August 1889 — the first luxury hotel in Britain to offer electric lighting and hot running water in each room — and has been operating on the Strand without interruption since. The location is extraordinary: a private forecourt off the Strand (the only road in Britain on which traffic drives on the right), the Thames Embankment below, the West End above, Covent Garden and the City equally accessible. The address communicates cultural centrality in a way that Mayfair, for all its weight, cannot entirely replicate.

The 267 rooms divide into two distinct worlds. The Edwardian rooms on the Thames side carry a palette of grey and tangerine that runs from fabrics to fixtures; the views, on upper floors, take in the river, the South Bank, and St Paul's. The Art Deco rooms on the Strand side lean into gold and caramel, with marble bathrooms as the baseline standard. The River View Suites represent the hotel's highest expression: dedicated butlers, private terraces on the most senior configurations, and a relationship with the Thames that defines the London hotel experience at its most cinematic.

The Thames Foyer — a winter garden under a glass cupola — serves afternoon tea in the form that the hotel invented in the late Victorian period. It remains the version against which all other London afternoon teas are measured, and the hotel appears to know this without complacency. The American Bar, revived in its original 1920s form, is the birthplace of the Corpse Reviver and the White Lady and holds its historical position in London's cocktail culture with something approaching justifiable pride. Kaspar's Seafood Bar & Grill, the hotel's main restaurant, delivers the kind of confident brasserie cooking that a hotel of this scale requires.

The Savoy Spa, over two floors, offers a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, and fourteen treatment rooms. The fitness suite is equipped to a serious standard. The concierge team has access, by virtue of the hotel's cultural standing, to theatre, opera, and event tickets that other hotels cannot reliably obtain; for visits built around the arts, this matters considerably.

Best for Anniversary

An anniversary at The Savoy carries the benefit of narrative — this is a hotel where anniversaries have been marked, quietly and otherwise, for over a century. The River View Suite, a champagne dinner at Kaspar's, cocktails in the American Bar: the sequence writes itself. The hotel's cultural position means that the evening can extend beyond the building — a short walk to the South Bank, to the Courtauld Gallery, to any number of theatre stages — and return to rooms with a view of the river that requires no commentary.

Best for Business

The Savoy sits between the City and the West End in a way that no other London hotel manages: ten minutes from the financial district, ten minutes from Mayfair, and possessing a meeting suite and client dining programme that the American Bar alone could sustain. For business travel where clients come from multiple directions, or where the entertainment question matters as much as the accommodation, The Savoy resolves both with a precision that newer hotels cannot purchase.
