"Jazz on Thursday, original beams from 1600, and a pool that has no business existing in a Saint-Germain building of this age. The d'Aubusson earns its place in the 6th with absolute conviction."

About Hôtel d'Aubusson

The building at 33 Rue Dauphine has been standing since the 17th century, which means the d'Aubusson has original beams, exposed stonework, and a monumental fireplace carved from Burgundy stone that no amount of renovation budget could reproduce. The hotel's fifty rooms incorporate these architectural facts rather than concealing them — antique furniture, four-poster beds in the suites, and a general atmosphere of civilised historic accumulation that the Right Bank's newer palaces spend fortunes attempting to replicate.

The rooms run from intimate to generous. All have marble bathrooms, Nespresso machines, and high-speed WiFi. The junior suite includes a four-poster bed and views of the interior courtyard with its marble statues — a Paris courtyard in the proper sense, private and unhurried, the kind that existed before the city started charging for its own atmosphere. The renovation maintained the building's integrity while installing the technical requirements of a contemporary luxury hotel. The results are better than the category usually produces.

The spa is the hotel's sleight of hand. In a 17th-century building on Rue Dauphine, you would not expect one of the largest hotel pools in Paris. There it is: a full-length swimming pool in the basement, flanked by a sauna, steam room, and fitness centre. The Nespresso-and-architecture formula works well enough upstairs, but the discovery of this pool on a grey February afternoon is among the better surprises Paris has to offer.

Café Laurent — the hotel's jazz bar — operates on Thursday and weekend evenings with live performances that lean toward bebop and swing rather than background music. This is a meaningful distinction. The bar serves serious cocktails and a wine list assembled with the kind of care that the Saint-Germain location demands. It functions equally well as a hotel bar for guests who want a drink before dinner and as a destination for Parisians who want jazz without the tourist premium of the more famous cave clubs on the Left Bank.

The location is the compact Saint-Germain that makes the neighbourhood worth the reputation. The Pont Neuf is a five-minute walk. The Musée de Cluny is ten minutes. The bouquinistes along the Seine — the secondhand booksellers with their green boxes on the quai walls — are practically at the door. Shakespeare and Company, the English bookshop under Notre-Dame, is fifteen minutes. The d'Aubusson is the hotel for guests who came to Paris to use it, not to sit in it.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

The d'Aubusson is built for solitary pleasure. The jazz bar offers company without obligation. The pool offers solitude without loneliness. The neighbourhood provides the most walkable grid in Paris for someone who wants to think while they move. The four-poster suite, the Burgundy stone fireplace in winter, the courtyard views in summer — these are pleasures that benefit from singular attention rather than the dilution of compromise.

Anniversary

For an anniversary that doesn't want to announce itself — that wants the beauty and the history without the palace scale — the d'Aubusson is the intelligent choice in Paris. Book the junior suite with the four-poster and the courtyard view. Jazz in the bar Thursday evening. The pool the following morning. Dinner at one of the six serious restaurants within a five-minute walk. Paris on the terms you came for.

Honeymoon

The d'Aubusson honeymoon is a Paris honeymoon for couples who have read Paris before they arrived — who came for the Seine at dawn, the jazz at midnight, the bookshops and the brasseries. The hotel accommodates this ambition without ceremony. The junior suite with the four-poster and the marble bathroom handles the romance. The jazz bar handles the evening. The neighbourhood handles the rest.
